Show American Baptist Publication Society CHICAGO May 22The American Baptist Publication society today elected Samuel A Crozier of Pennsylvania president A largo number of other officers were also elected A committee report was adopted recommending that the managers appoint men to urepare a catechism for use in Sunday schools At the afternoon session a sensational episode oc curred involving the race question Rev A Bingaof Virginia presented a protest from the Virginia State Association of Colored Baptists condemning the publication society for the indignity offered the colored people by dropping through race prejudice the names of Revs Lowe Simmonds and Brooks from the list of contributors to the Baptis Teacher Mr Binga firmly demanded an explanation of the dropping of his three colored brethren General Secretary Griffiths assumed all the responsibility He said the three ministers In ter troubles at Indianapolis last year which the people had exaggerated and misunderstood The three were thoreby unfitted to servo as editorial writers and the publishers who had the right so informed them At the conclusion of Dr Griffiths remarks the protest was re ferred to the board of managers It was inti mated during the discussion on the matter that unless something Is done to counteract the effect of the dismissal of the three colored writers the Baptists are liable to have their hold on the colored race weakened |
