Show Billy 3Iyer Knocked Out NEW ORLEANS May 23 Billey Myer the Streator cyclone met Andy Bowen a local lightweight in a finish fight for 53000 with five ounce gloves at the West Athletic club this evening Bowen won the fight in the twenty seventh round Both men entered the ring ap parently in good condition and fit for a hard fight Considerable money was up most of it being laid with odds of a to 1 on Myer Pat Kenrick a prominent local sport was chosen referee and a great crowd was present People in fact began to gather before 7 oclock and at 9 there were over three thou sand in the house including many notables in the sporting line Jake Kilrain was greeted with great applause Bowen weighed in at 130 Ji pounds Myers 13 When they appeared In the ring much delay was occasioned by dis putes especially over Myer having a bandaged right wrist which he hurt in a fight with Hop ncr three weeks ago Bowen for some time re llCU L ngm Ult S Itwas taken but time was called 01 tnaly tme caled at 1030 Bowen opened the first lrst round by leading and hitting Myer on the shoulder He then rushed him and hit him again Bowen had the beat of the round In the Second there was some lively Bowen getting in four licks to Myers three sparring In the third both men got In telling blows but both seemed about even I the fourth Myer hit Bowen a terrible lick on the neck Andy retailed Myer bleeding from one eye and blowing bleedig In the fifth after some hard Bowen threw Slyer and had the infighting round The next two rounds were sparring for wind i 1rom thi tn tho htAnnth n h with cautious sparring v and short vuuu spurts aHcraleu and sharp infighting no severe blows being given In the sixteenth Bowen did some hard leading and hit Myer on the neck and a terrible blow under the heart In tho seventeenth he hit Myer on the face but a blow came back at him and after some vicious infighting the round ended in Myers favor lIers In the eighteenth Bowen landed on Myers ear and followed with a swipe on his neck which staggered Billy They clinched on the ropes and Bowen got the best of it In the nineteenth both men were tired but Bowen succeeded in considerably a good one on Myers neck while Billy crosscoun tered whie BUy In the twentieth Myer chased Bowen around and told him to come up and fight Bowen hit Slyer on the neck and l anl gut him on the ropes then after sharp fighting Myer knocked Bowen r on the ropes by a powerful blow in the neck In the twentysecond Bowen seemed fresher After some sparring for wind he smashed Myer square on the nose chest In the twentythird he led and hit Billy in the In the twentyfourth Billy did some Bly leading and hit Bowen on the neck after which there was some hard in fighting In the twentyfifth both men were very cau j tious Bowen hit Slyer in the breast and then in the mouth Billy made a tremendous lunge at his opponent and missed both men bleeding freely The round ended with hard In fighting In the twentysixth witlhard terrible cut on the left eye and blood on the breast Bowen lead and missed Both men strike each other but Bowen gets the best of it Myer makes a terrible lung for a knockout blow but Bowen ducks and gets away At the end of the twenty sixth honors aro about equally divided Twentyseventh round Botn men fought like demons and clinched The round ends 1 Myers favor Tho ring is now full of police officers I looked as i Myer had won pOlce lwentyeighth round Bowen leads Myer pets away both men exhaused Slyer gets lycr Bowen on the ropes and the police separate them When time was called for the separte twenty ninth round Mr Chencey came forward and gave the fight up He claimed Myer had gave out in the tenth round Tho referee gave the round fight to Bowen ending in the twentyeighth |
