William Shakespeare wrote 39 plays. We have seen most of the plays several times. Each year the difference is the director and how they envision the play. My favorite play of this season was Taming of the Shrew. The director set the play in the days shortly after World War II in Italy. Shakespeare originally set the play in Italy, so no liberties were taken here. This year the director added “O Sole Mio”, Dean Martin’s “Amore” and opera songs. In the story of William Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew Baptista has two daughters, Katharina and Bianca. Both daughters are smart and beautiful. Bianca is sweet and beloved by all who meet her. All who meet Katharina fear her. Katharina does not mince words and freely tells the men who come to court her what she thinks is wrong with them. Many men want to marry Bianca, but Baptista decides that Bianca cannot be married before Katharina. Petruchio decides to take on the challenge of taming Kate, as he calls her. He is, in this season’s version, a soldier from America. On their first meeting, Kate is being her usual self, but Petruchio is not deterred. After a few minutes of verbal and physical teasing, he announces that he and Kate will be married that Sunday, against Kate’s will. He shows up late to the wedding, dressed in women’s clothing. On the honeymoon Kate is taken to Petruchio’s bivouac. Part of the taming process is to deny Kate food and sleep. Kate is so desperate for food after a few days, that she tries to open a can, but has no can opener. Petruchio catches her, and tells her that the food isn’t fit for her. When food is offered in the camp. Petruchio always manages to find something wrong with it because it is either raw or too well done, neither of which is ever true. Subsequently Katharina has not eaten for a few days. During this time they are planning to return to visit Kate’s father and sister. On the day they are planning to travel back to Kate’s hometown, Petruchio tells Kate that they will leave in the morning since it is now night. Kate, seeing the sun plainly in the sky, tells Petruchio that it is day. Petruchio angrily strides off declaring it is night, and that they will not leave until Kate declares that it is night. Finally they return to Kate’s father’s house for a visit. At the gathering are two other couples, Bianca, now married, and a former suitor of Bianca’s, now also married. The men all ask Petruchio how married life is treating him. He claims that he has the most obedient wife. The other men are amazed and disbelieving and decide to place bets to see whose wife is most obedient. The test will be to see whose wife will come first when her husband calls her. The first two wives tell their husbands that they are too busy just then, and to come to them. Only Kate comes when requested, and when asked, forcibly brings the other two wives with her. She then delivers a lecture to the wives about how to be a good wife. Kate has seen from Petruchio’s “taming” what she was like and she sees the misery of being ornery and curt when there is no need to be. terviewed by the judges previous to the performance and they also participated in on-stage question, talent, and evening gown competitions. The winner of Junior Miss Peach Days was Kiley Jensen, with first attendant McKayla Worthen and Securities & services offered through Equitrust Marketing Services, LLC. • 5400 University Avenue.
