Grove Sport' Frampton Helps Racers Find Home by Jack Hill "We're tired of being hasseld by the cop's and having to race at 2:00 am." Following that poin-ted statement, Chris Carter then asked City Police Officer John Frampton, the man who had recently "wrote him up for illegal exhibition of speed," to come down town and have a talk. The sight of several cars backed in on main street with guys sitting on the hoods gave Of-ficer Frampton some uneasy second thoughts concerning what this 'talk was going to be about.' Geneva consented to letting cars park in the salt grass pastures and other property owners signed realeases alowing the weekly events to be held. For two years the popular races were stagged there untill the cars became "to fast for the two lane road." With Frampton spearheading the program, Pleasant Grove City property on the canyon road in Manilla, was conver-ted- d to a circular track and for one season stock car races were held there. However, property owners in the area objected to the dust and noise, in-sisting that property values were being ad-versely affected, so i. ... Peggy Frampton and Lynda Millar take care of admissions, timing and recording while Roxene Adams takes photo's that frequently appear in the paper. Plans for the future include lighting for night time races and the completion of the cement safety wall. In addition to the regular program of car and bike races, Satur-day the 22nd will feature a demolition derby. Roundabout, billed as "Pleasant Groves MODIFIED Marty West "stands on it" down straightaway in Modified Main event to place 2nd. fastest growing sport" is alive, well and growing and the future looks bright. Frampton and his harried band of race fans began to look elsewhere. Mayor Cornell Haynie offered city property behind the ball fields and with "hours and hours of donated help", the present Roundabout Track took shape. Savage Brothers donated heavy earth moving equipment to help build the track and Sheryl Carlson, a con-tractor, helped get the concrete for a safety wall at a reduced price. Some used guard rail was "donated" by the State Road Commssion and the bleachers from the old junior high were moved in for spectator seating. With used lumber a timing and announ-cers stand was erected. Things looked in good shape three days prior to the first race day when someone poured gasoline on the stand, set it on fire and burned it to the ground. Undaunted, Frampton, who"knows full well but is unable to prove who set the fire," went back to work and helped build another stand. That was four years ago. Roundabout now runs a 22 week circular race program in the summer and 14 weeks of drag racing in the winter. "People told me you can't do it, it won't work running a track on sportsmanship and just for trophies," Fram-pton said. Smiling with an air of justifiable pride he added, "but Roosevelt and Bon-neville ask us to bring our cars to their tracks and run."
