Show ARMY CHANGES THERE WILL BE A GREAT NUt BER THIS YEAR YAR Age Will Relieve Several of Their Commands and There Will Be Promotions All Along the Line A Chicago Jan 15A Washington special says There is going to be a general shaking shak-ing up of the army during 1S97 and Presidentelect McKinley will have the selection of a majorgeneral and brigadiergeneral within two months after he is inaugurated March 4 1897 Among the general officers the first vacancy created on account of reaching reach-Ing the legal requirement of 64 years will be that of MaJorGeneral Thomas H Ruger who will be 64 on April 2 1897 A little later May 8 Brigadier I General Frank Wheaton will reach the retiring age There will be a vacancy age cancy in the adjutantgenerals de j I partment after Jan 25 when Colonel I Oliver D Green will be retired and Sept 1 BrigadierGeneral George D I Ruggles adjutantgeneral of the army will be 61 years of age In the quartermasters quarter-masters department there will be a retirement I re-tirement June 1 when Lieutenant Colonel Louis C Forsyth will reach the prescribed age Within a few days Jan 18 BrigadierGeneral j Michael R Morgan will retire from the I head of the subsistence department of I the army and his probable successor Colonel Thomas C Sullivan will be 64 years of age Nov 1 1897 Colonel Charles L Alexander wil be ineligible of service in the medical department after May 3 and LieutenantColonel William Waters will reach the retiring age Nov 15 There may be a vacancy in the corps of engineers before the close of President Clevelands administration adminis-tration although the chief of enL I gineers BrigadierGeneral William Craglll is not eligible for retirement I until July 1 of this year There was a verbal agreement made however when he was promoted that he would be content con-tent with the office of chief of engineers en-gineers until the dawn of 1897 Should he retire there would be retre tere an opportunity opportun-ity afforded Colonel John 11 Wilson at present superintendent of public buildings and grounds to become his I successor and President Cleveland j I would like to make this promotion before be-fore leaving Washington There will be but one change in the cavalry owing to the age requirement during 1897 and Major James Jackson will be eligible for retirement Nov 21 There will be a chance for several I promotions in the infantry during this year commencing with Colonel James I S Casey who will retire Jan 28 Captain Cap-tain Henry Romeyn will follow suit June 1 and Colonel William J Lester June 22 July 6th will find Captain Francis E Pierce eligible for retirement retire-ment and the other infantry officers who will be eligible comprise three majors Otis W Pollock Aug 7 Francis E Lacey Aug S and Clarence E Bennett Dec 22 Two post chap lains will become vacant this year Captain George W Dunbar March 8 and Joseph G Irish Aug 7 From the foregoing list it B be seen that Presidentelect McKinley will have considerable business on hand as far a the army is concerned for everyone eligible for promotion will not hesitate about preferrg claims upon the new administration |
