Show Marker for oldChaffin Mill Site As a project, the Cedar City Birthday Committee, decided to build a marker at the Chaff in Mill Site just east of the new Canyon Park in the mouth of Cedar Canyon. Alva Matheson, a committee member, was in charge, Under his direction the location was excavated and the remains of a building 20x24 feet was uncovered. Proof of the mill's existance was evidenced by rusty machinery, charcoal, cleaned wheat and flour found at the site. It was decided that the site should be fenced and the materials for the fence was purchased by the Birthday Committee. Michael Anderson, great, great grandson of Lewis Rice Chaffin, decided to build the fence as an Eagle Scout Project. He was assisted by members of Scout Troop 333 sponsored by the Cedar First Ward. Anderson and his troop members also ran a cement base for the monument with Western Rock contributing the cement for the project. It is known that Mr. Chaffin owned and operated the mill from approximately 1857 to 1875 and possibly longer. The mill burned, but the cause or date of the fire has not been determined. Further information is being sought so that a suitable marker can be placed at the monument. Information should be directed to Alva Matheson of Cedar City. |
