Show Sugar Cane. Sugar cane requires an abundance ' of sunshine nnd water and a deep, fertile fer-tile soil. In planting the stalks are laid lengthwise In furrows, and each joint sends up a shoot, which later produces suckers. When ready for harvesting a field of sugar cane resembles re-sembles a corn field, hut the plants are somewh-at larger and there are no tassels and no ears. The stalks at this time have been growing about 12 months nnd have charged from green to reddish in color, while most of the lower leaves have fallen nway. Tbey are cut by hand with a long knife, stripped of their leaves and carried on carts or small cars to the sugar mill. |
