Represented by the Painters Local 77, the 250 union members are asking the Salt Lake Chapter of Painting and Decorating Contractors of America for a $1.05 an hour wage increase now, with an equal pay boost following in 11 months. They also want $24 a day to cover out of town expenses and a contract expiration date of June 30, 1979. Hourly wage in the last contract called for $9.20 per hour for brush and roller journeyman painters. Agreement seem miles away, however, with contractors agreeing to pay a 50 cents per hour increase each year and an increase in the "free n zone for work from the 20 miles contained in out-of-tow- out-of-tow- the last agreement to 40 miles in their latest proposal. Ad- ditionally, the contractors propose to eliminate one of two 10 minute breaks each day and extend for one year all other money agreements without change. Max Manning of Local 77said "theres no way he could estimate the duration of this strike. The last one lasted two and a half months, he said. Some contractors hired n workers and the union countered by picketing them. Currently there are no pickets on the line, Man-in- g non-unio- said. Painters affected by the strike reside in the area bounded by the Arizona border on the south to just north of Salt Lake City.
