Pye Sports Writer Terming her team's effort as 'lethargic at best,' head girl's basketball bas-ketball coach Kristy Putnam was understandably at a loss to explain the team's recent 72-47 loss at the hands of Carbon last Thursday at Carbon. "Despite our other losses (the team stands at 2-10 for the season), I felt like we were showing improvement im-provement as a team in each game. The girl's have had a strong showing show-ing in some aspect of the game in every contest. But the Carbon game stands as a low point for us. We played poorly in just about every facet and what was even more disturbing dis-turbing is there seemed to be players play-ers who didn't seem to mind very much," a frustrated Putnam related. The Lady Utes started the first quarter slowly on both ends of the court and things got worse from there. With three senior starters and another coming off the bench, the combined senior production on the offensive end for the first half was II points, and Lynette Colovich scored nine of those. Defensively, the team was just as ineffective. Trailing 17-9 after the first quarter, the Lady Utes gave up 27 second quarter points to trail by 25 at half-time half-time 44-19. "We have a bunch of very nice senior se-nior players. They get along great with all the other players, but on the court, other than Lynette, we're not getting the leadership and play we need from them," Coach Putnam said, "I don't care how good a team is, they should never be able to score 27 points in one quarter. We just weren't hustling or getting after anything. We were out-rebounded, out-hustled and out-played in every facet of the game." The Lady Dino's, ranked in the top five in 3A, ran and shot Uintah into a corner, hitting 12 of 18 free throws and registering 16 field goals compared to Uintah's 7 of 13 from the foul line and six field goals. Uintah's second half effort was better, but it came mostly against Lady Dino backups. Even then, Carbon out scored Uintah 14-11 in the third period to build their advantage advan-tage to 28 at 58-30. "It was a little embarrassing. They were obviously substituting freely and we still couldn't put any kind of run togeth er," Putnam said. Behind Colovich's six points, Uintah cut the Dino lead to 25 at the final buzzer for the 47-72 decision. High scoring sophomore guard Deena VanTassel was held to a season sea-son low two points. "Carbon did a good job of harassing Deena with double teams to disrupt our offense. They knew Deena gets us going and played us accordingly," Coach Putnam explained. Continuing a season long struggle at the free throw line, Uintah was a dismal 9 of 19 from the charity stripe. Lynette Colovich continued her scoring march with a game high 18 points. Shauni Boren followed Colovich in scoring with seven, Marci Christensen six, Susan Emmett, Mara Reynolds and Amber White each totalled four with Mikki Miller and VanTassel two apiece. The J.V. team will travel to Altamont Saturday to take on the Lady Longhorns varsity team with regular varsity action taking place Friday, January 5 at Park City. "We'll try and regroup for Park City," Coach Putnam concluded, "it's our first region game and as we've told the girls, everyone gets a clean slate at 0-0 to begin region." Union grabbed the momentum with a pin victory at 125 when Greg McKec lost to two time state champion cham-pion Travis Marx. It appeared the tide had changed drastically when Union's Tom Meacham led Utc Dallon McKec at 130 up to the last few seconds of the match. That's when McKee scored an escape and takedown to tic the match at 7-7 as time ran out. McKec then scored on a takedown during overtime for the win. Dallon was the second in a lineup weight change which saw eight Uintah wrestlers drop down one weight class from 125 through 171. "We feel we will be more competitive competi-tive in the long run with the change. This first match was tough on the kids because many of them had a tough time dropping down in time for this match," Stensgard explained. ex-plained. Trailing 16-6, Union came back with a 5-2 win at 135 and pin at 140 to pull within one at 16-15. Jesse Cook defeated Jimmy Lewis at 135 while Charley Jenkins pinned D.J. Wiseman at 140. Dirk Huber staged an impressive comeback at 145. After trailing 5-0, Huber score a last second takedown for a 7-5 decision. Union returned the favor at 152 when the Cougars Jeramy Jeppsen pulled out an 8-6 victory after trailing trail-ing Dace Mowry most of the match. In one of the wildest, most action filled matches of the evening, Union's Mike Bingham defeated Ute Isaac Hatch 12-11. Hatch trailed 12-8 late in the fourth when a final flurry of action saw Isaac score on an escape and takedown, but run out of time with the crowd going wild to see their man hold on. Now it was the Utes turn to come back. Down 21-19, Beau Hacking and Clint McKeachnie seemed to give Uintah an insurmountable 31-21 31-21 lead with two consecutive pins at 171 and 189. "We thought the match was ours after Clint pinned Labrum at 189," Coach Stensgard said, "but you've got to give Union credit, they did what they had to to win." Uintah will not see varsity action again until they host the prestigious Tournament of Champions January 5-6 at the Western Park. 1 1 - --ft f ?
