That's the advice from Capt. Kelly Wing, the director of managed care at the U.S. Air Force Hospital, Hill, to military retirees and working spouses of military members covered under another health benefits plan in addition to CHAMPUS. "Federal law requires that CHAMPUS pay after all other health plans except Medicaid and insurance policies that are specifically designated as CHAMPUS supplements." Wing said. "This means that if you have another health plan in addition to CHAMPUS, the other plan must pay whatever it covers before CHAMPUS will make a payment." beneficiaries who beAlso. CHAMPUS-eligibllong to a health maintenance organization cannot opt out of using the HMO plan and use CHAMPUS as a primary insurance, he said. "After your health plan has paid, then CHAMPUS will pay remaining costs for covered services, e up to the amount it would have paid had there been no other health benefits plan involved," Wing said. Frequently, other health benefits plans will pay the entire claim, leaving nothing for CHAMPUS to pay. Beneficiaries should submit these claims to CHAMPUS to ensure that the amounts paid by the other plans are credited to your CHAMPUS deductible, the captain said. For more information concerning other health insurance or any other health benefit question, call the health benefits office at Ext. 77036 or visit the office at the hospital, room M-10-0- 4.
