millennial star please pease f copy odden CITY january 1879 taylor dear brother in accordance with your appointment I 1 left ogden city jan jau ath 1879 for the purpose of visiting the schools of morgan and summit counties bly my plan of procedure was as follows I 1 first called a trustees true tees meeting where a gramme pro could be arranged with the object of facilitating travel and ascertaining what echolls were in session at the clo cio close e of my tour in each county I 1 again appointed a meeting to which the tru trustees leacher teachers and leading men were were invited my afy object in calling this rne rue meeting eting was to tell the teachers nud mud trustees the defects of their schools and houses and to counsel with them aa as to what would be the best beat means of improving thein them rather than to publish a mans name or a district abroad I 1 take pleasure in stating that these meetings were always attended by the presidency of the stake the bishops bearly nearly all the trustees and school teachers of the county as well as men interested in the cause of education at the first meeting referred to we arranged to visit two schools a day and hold meeting every evening at the settlement where we visited in the afternoon these meetings were always attended by the youth and the aged by means ef of which we gained access to the ears of 61 the people which otherwise we could not have done the houses were generally filled and the people manifested great interest in the education of their children realizing also that the smallest and poorest districts were usually neglected on occasions like this I 1 determined that so far aa as my feeble efforts W were e r 0 co concerned I 1 would labor where the greatest amount of good could be accomplished and where the mot moot assistance was needed this thia of course ia required more time than I 1 at first anti ipat ed but still no district felt itself neglected morgan county as a rule la Is well supplied with school houses and taking into consideration the loss joss of crops year after year by frost and grasshoppers I 1 question althere if il there is any county in the territory any better supplied the smallest districts numbering only from 12 to 20 famile families sare bare are fur with nice commodities and mostly brick schoolhouses well finished on the outside and with an aperture in the ceiling for ventilation but I 1 am sorry borry to state that in many instance instances the child childrens rena reua comfort on the inside has been neglected and the house has haa been seated more for meeting purposes than for a accommodating mo dating the children at school this is of course wroe wi cwi when we remember that parents aie aio only occupying the house but a little over two hours A ours on the sabbath day while the children have bave to be in school bix six boura hours a day for five days iu in the week a ana and bd then we expect them to attend the sabbath school and all the rest of the meetings besides I 1 question if plain decent furniture would cost much more than forms and would beat seat almost as many many of the houses also lack charts globes and blackboards in such cases caseb he the teacher has nothing but taut the dry text book to interest his hla pup papua coupe with that an old time teacher teachers or a man who has never had bad any experience in teaching nor qualified fled fied himself forthe office by atten axten attending dinca dinga a school where he might get a good practical system and is it any wonder that in many instances we are bob bom compelled to drive our children to school with the nods rods rod where tile the teacher again receives them with frown to make a statue thrill and with a similar weapon to the former to bid them welcome welco onn onu why can we n t smile on our child children reif they in their innocent glees gleea are sent to us from thel the courts above and god will surely emile on us if we treat them hem as men and women in embryo the result from tho the first method is that our young men and ladles are not found there at all and only the little ones who cannot help thern themselves selves are immured between those dusky wails Oa mair maZi eho tho inside of the schoolhouse and get a teacher who will govern with kindness instead of the rod and who his profession as the mechanic must who undertakes to make a beautiful bureau and aad see if it we will not soon boon have a change the schools were all nil in session but aa as already intimated mostly attended by the little ones with but few exceptions the teachers were mostly young men and young ladles ladies born and educated in utan and what they lal ial lacked jacked ked in qualification however was generally made up in exemplary habits the best school taught in my estimation is the one at north morgan under the direction of miss rhoda slates a young lady who has bee been n attending the university for two years bhe she appears to have a natural tact for teaching by which she has won the good feelings and respect of pupils and parents president smith and the leading men are anxious to promote the e educational ducat ional lonal interests ot the county they have realized for some time the necessity of establishing a high school or seminary where their youth might be educated instead of depending on transients ts or sending their children abroad fur of course it is cheaper to bring a good teacher into the county and thus give all a chance of an education than to 0 send a few away from home subject to the temptations naw now existing in our cities without the parental care to guard them to depend on the university for teachers favery ia very good goods so far aa as it goes but we should remember that all who are sent will not return te teachers achere a man may be well wel educated and then be not fit to teach Eve hool chool the bishops and trustees were always present when we visited their schools except iu in one instance at Wan wanshin ship ant and all appeared to r real al ize the necessity of such an institution and I 1 believe ere long both morgan and summit counties will educate their advanced students at home the children appeared bright and int intelligent elligen t and comely in dress diess indeed I 1 never have in all my travels els eis in the new now world or the old seen any fairer faces or any brighter ter eyes nor any better dressed children than these two counties exhibited the schoolhouses school houses of summit county were rather inferior to those of morgan but the character of the schools was somewhat of a higher grade I 1 found more of the young men and young ladies enrolled and the students area arol think a little further advanced but like the former it suffers for the want of w high school where the leach beach era miga t tho the be educated to a higher standard with such men however aa as president muff duff elders johnf johnp boyden boy den ward E pack and others equally interested but too numerous to mention this county will soon take a step upwards and claim her position among the lead leading counties on educational matters in the territory steps I 1 was informed had llad already been taken to secure a good teacher and the object la Is to tit fit op up a large room loom in the court house for this purpose I 1 was pleased to find the Co coalville alville school hoase boase partly seated with andrews andrewa a patent desks campbl campsa maps globe oil pan tings tinga beautiful mottoes worked by the delicate fingers of the ladies of the sabbath school and framed by the trustees to ornament a vacant space here and there also a large bell in the belfry to summon the children to school there are two things however very much needed a decent sized blackboard and a convenient outhouse this county has been drawing on the B Y academy for its ral gal baj teachers from which source it bas baa as obtained very good results many of the students I 1 was informed are now attending there and at the university the schools were ora era all in season I 1 believe relieve Jel jei feve leve with tile the exception except on or of one and a pleasing feature I 1 noticed in ail all au of them namely a map of utah mr john JK hall fiall a well inform ed gentleman and whose example is worthy of imitation is superintendent of the former county while mr chas mills a wideawake wide awake and energetic man superintends super intends the latter both gentlemen labor for the interests In teresta of their of man it will come to nought but if it be of gou god go d it cannot be overthrown s he has yet to learn that the voice ot of the people is the voice of god and their behesta he must obey we would like to have the editor point out with peoples voice Is the voice of god if he would tell us that it is the people of the united states we would ask what portion cf the people whether it be the or the republican jar party ty which voice was ms the voice ot god when the federals and confederates were the contending parties no doubt the british people claimed that their voice was the voice of god at the time they invaded this thib country in the revolutionary war they might also at the present time set bet up a claim with equal propriety BOW now that they are at war with the afghans also at the
