Amencans actually believe they decide-by mt'in"31' Ser6t barU0t-the fate of their nation. It amaz'"g a nation of well-educated people can believe his hogwash. When election time rolls around, it is the votes of several hundred persons that decide who wins. It isn t even district majorities that make the vote, since it is possible-and has happened-for a representative to vote contrary to the majority wish of his district. The electoral college system is contrary to the basic conept of "government by the people. It is not the district representative, bu the individual vote of each citizen, that should decide who takes public office or retires from political life. A system, which allows a candidate to be elected without the support of the popular vote, is as un-American as the Communist Manifesto. (Sen. Eugene McCarthy, take note.) The electoral college has no place in U.S. government, and as long as it exists, we will have a government by the few--not by the majority, as the founding fathers supposedly intended. Americans also believe those things that sound the prettiest. "Government of the people, by the people, and for the people ..." has a pleasant ring. Why salivate over its ring-like Pavlov's dogs-when there is no meat? The U.S. government has conditioned her citizens to believe the ring is the food. But it isn't. Loose Interpretation Loose interpretation of the Constitution is prohibitive where such a basic issue is involved. Washington and his associates intended the voice of the people to be heard. Government by the people is not a reality, and to make it one the present electoral system must be abolished. A new system of one man, one vote, and all citizens and states equal, must become fact. |
