not have a choice Saying what Young couldn't San Francisco 49ers coach Steve Mariucci on Wednesday said “Our defense played real good that was like one of the best defensive games we've had all year I was real proud of them” After sitting and watching his Young's concussion problems almost certainly would keep him sidelined for the rest of the season And the health risks associated with getting another could prevent him from ever playing again "There's a small part of me that would love to see him running around throwing touchdown passes again" Mariucci said “I think the whole world would love to see that But there's a larger part of me that has to be ready to have him unavailable “I hope that Steve could play again someday He is trying to get to that point He knows that it's a long shot but I don't know that he wants to admit that every teammates turn in their best defensive effort of the season Newson took some heat at need to make my own name for myself Tony is gone I'm here now We play with two different styles” Newson is not angry when compared to the former Big West Defensive Player of the Year In fact he learned a lot playing behind D’ Amato the last two years D Amato studied film all the time and “was a student of the game” Newson said Newson is now spending plenty of time viewing film “Tony has always been a film guy” USU linebackers coach Tom McMahon said “He will come in on his own and watch film for two hours That definitely pays off He learned that from Tony D’ Amato” 234-pound- er from Las Vegas had to wait his turn But with a school record holder ahead of him on the depth chart Newson knew it was just a matter of time “They called me the X linebacker iast year” Newson said “I had to play all the positions I understood I had to wait my time with Tony D’ Amato what can you say” The time has arrived more than ready to do some hitting “I couldn't wait” he said If the Vandals didn't know who No 19 was by the end of the night they did Newson made 21 tackles including 14 unassisted and one for a loss “It was by far his best game" McMahon said “He made a lot e of plays He came with intensity” Aggie defensive coordinator Paul Arslanian agreed “I don't think there is any quesbig-tim- tion about that being his best game” Arslanian said “He played like we expected him too" Arslanian said he simplified the defense some and gave Newson more freedom to make plays “Tony has come a long way as far as coming in and watching film” Arslanian said “He is very committed to it As far as athletic ability he could be as good as he wants to be “What he needs to do now is be consistent I told him anybody can be a flash in the pan a one-tim- e deal I’ve thought percentages on it but today I'm not on the field so it's zero percent" he said “I'm not going to play in the next couple weeks or the next few weeks “I don’t want to put a time frame on it But 1 think in time I will be able to put enough time between the incident that the unknowable might become knowable If time runs out on the season so be it” Mariucci said the team has discussed putting Young on injured reserve which would finish him for the year But Young has pleaded for patience and out of respect to him the team is allowing more time before making a decision “He doesn't want to leave it or let it go” Mariucci said “He wants to be involved Mariucci added that the injured reserve list could be inevitable for Young “At this point we don’t need day It's like being down 20 that roster spot Now if we get an points He's not going to concede injury or two we may reconsider the loss because he's a fighter" And Steve knows that” Mariucci said Young in his first public comments in two weeks said he conYoung insists he is indeed seritinues to hold out hope of playing ous about his health He says the again though he conceded he has death of a San Jose high school no idea when or if he’ll receive football player following a conmedical clearance cussion was “sobering to all of “This has not been the easiest us not just myself” But he said he needs more time thing to deal with” Young said “I will not play unless Dr (Gary) and information before deciding Steinberg mid the coaching staff on his future Young continues to and myself feel that it's the right consult with specialists and speak with players who have been drithing to da” Sidelined since suffering his ven from the game by repeated fourth concussion in three years a concussions He said he will ultimately abide month ago the quarterback refused to rule out a by his doctor's recommendations comeback this season and does not fear being forced to “I don’t know if you can put quit prac- tice When he was cleared to don the pads last Saturday against Idaho Newson was player” Newson said “I just The San Francisco preparing for life without star quarterback at helm Newson had started the season solid but left the Arkansas State game with a pinched nerve in his shoulder He had to sit out the Kansas Suite game “That was like murder on me” Some may have been a bit concerned when Tony D' Amato graduated last winter He was the leader of the Aggie defense and anchored the middle at linebacker for two years When he left there were some pretty big shoes to fill at Utah State Another Tony has stepped in and is doing just fine But when junior Tony Newson took over he brought his own shoes “Tony (D’ Amato) was a great Page 9 Young facing long odds in return bid Aggie linebacker leads team Big West in tackles per game By Shawn Harrison sports writer — SJoim
