Show lira waft wnmmm l rranrsfl We must work Thanks for teaching me to think together to fight on drugs war Daren Fairbanks decide the way my life should be lived for myself okay Now by JD I’ll Conover staff writer September of 1988 That happens to be the time when my adventures as a collegiate nobody would begin I reflect back to then and think about looking forward to now a dreading two year haul that was before me It's college It's the big time Doctors for teachers governing of my own time real finals death to remedial learning I was apprehensive with a deep rooted curiosity and excitement The world was before me and I knew one day I would conquer alL What was I thinking? Talk about a disillusioned youth I was up in the night poopin' m the wrong nest one can shy of a six pack makin' bread without flour and about to leant a whole lot of nothing that would eventually amount to everything I quickly changed my definition of "conquer” from owning all the property commanding all the prestige and wielding all the power to a two year commitment to excellence in everything that was contained within this college subculture Later I amended and refined this broad definition to a much more concise easy to understand and easier to follow format consisting of two words HI decide! I employed this idea after I was shockingly informed that the main objective of a college education was to make a guy think Silly me under the impression that I would use all the neat stuff they were going to teach me All they want to teach me is how to think? Great well I’ll tell you what I think 1 think I already know how to think so what were they thinking when they decided to teach me to think? OK If you want to teach me how to think don't you think I might know whit's best for my thinking? Hey I’ll decide! It never really bothered me that the only benefit my general education would do for me is make me eligible for Jeopardy I could even see how some of my classes were teaching me to think Maybe not better but at least I was thinking right? It keeps the higher ups happy anyway The whole idea behind GE classes makes a guy feel like he's just going through the motions in a system that was created by others to keep the system's creators happy That's all most of my collegiate toils have turned out to be is just motions It was while I went through these "motions” that I actually did learn to think better If it was outside the classroom I learned from it I learned that it is very difficult to be "parented" by a man who doesn't command a thimble full of my respect and has recently taken up the hobby of window peeping and listening at doors Yes Mr Ott I am speaking quite unfondly of you and only you Don't feel bad At least you earned it I decided that almost all things motivated totally by greed are bad Y is a crooked letter that can't be fixed but is a question we all should ask and you can't find anything better than good fellowship among trusted companions answer I now think about things that I nor anyone else has been able to Most are simple questions that will be answered with age and Eagle by staff writer wisdom Other thoughts delve into human nature with my only fulfillment coming from the fact that even though my answers are probably wrong so are everyone else's Are they unanswerable? Or are we in a dark age of philosophical advancement with the desired knowledge a mere two centuries out of reach? Fatalism existentialism infinity why the Jazz can't win in play offs and the meaning of life are often pondered There are also those questions that arose because I had been taught to think I sometimes think maybe if I had never been taught to think I wouldn't lose sleep at night thinking! The thought that really gets me from the whole of this wretched mess called life is that I probably would have learned to think without going to college But when I did come to college and let them try to teach me to think I used this process to derive answers for questions posed by myself and others to better this institution I've been thinking and decided these things Even though I have been here under intensive thinking training I only have two years of experience thinking so my thoughts can't be worth much We also should learn from history end follow it exactly as it transpired so that new ideas never come about changes desired or something made different for the belter Above all never question authority! That's why they are authority and you're not stupid! You may be able to think but obviously your thoughts are misaligned You can't help but feel that way sometimes I'm not here to go the against system contrary to the popular belief of lesser mental vessels and just as true the system is not here to go against me It wu something that wu ideally created to go along with and aid individuals even if politics hu allowed the system to be used for personal gains and betterment of the fools who are a part of it People who take refuge in the systems found amongst modem society have no place there They are not a working part so to speak but a hindrance and a wute They're also the common place abusers of power who have no idea how to use it At CEU these people tend to be the mu who end up trying to tell me how to live Hey 111 decide Does it make sense to anyone that I am old enough to desire my independence attend college and a whole hut of adult responsibilities and therefore want to "make my own bed" and in turn Tie in it?" Who are you to tell me how to live? Who died and left you king? If my rights for free speech can be swung freely long they never touch the nose of another who are you to move the deciding line? Why is your discretion so great that you can decide what is loo loud obscene offensive a study hall etc After aQ aren't all people different? Do we all think alike? Does a paycheck give someone the right to govern my right when they have no governing ability? Take heed ladies and especially certain gentlemen Think before and act you prove yourselves to be the fools in action that you are in You thought may be protected by a system but you really lack the mental Even if you've been to college and you think thin you think you backing can or should tell me how to live think again Ill decide OK? u u According to statistics for the United Statu released in a bulletin of the Utah Medical Association 24000 people died in alcohol related traffic accidents in 1989 In 1988 there wu one alcohol related death every 22 minutes During that same year over half a million people were injured in drug and alcohol related accidents (an average of one per minute) which is more than the number injured and killed in all of the wars the US hu ever fought in including the Civil Wu "In the US billions of 'dollars are spent every year on first time treatment of drug addiction billions more are spent on patients and added billions are spoil to pay for the medical costs of those injured in drug related accidents or lost in productivity because of drug abuse" CEU’s Dean of Student Life Jay Andrus said of the scope of the nations drug problem Drug abuse experts and researchers almost unanimously agree that with such startling statistics effecting the US we must fight to control substance abuse Officials at the US Drug Enforcement Administration emphasize the need for the nation to "stop seeing the drug war President Bush's 'war on drugs' and see it a wu which seems to dwuf other wars of great magnitude one we must all re-ent- ry u u fight" Genetics may play a role In alcoholism by Daren Fairbanks staff writer In April researchers at the University of Texas Science Center published a paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association saying that they have identified a gene that may predispose a person to al- coholism (continued on page 3) Summer sessions feature small classes SSeaff Shewmake News Editor HUHNIHINHHININMiaHNIMIMlimiNMmiWMmMMNI Cordy West Gina Howard Feature Editor Arts and Entertainment Editor mm Kris tie Eliason m Richard Hidcmon Editor a mm mm mm m mm M mmm im Sports Travis Mann JD Conover Daren Fairbanks ReporlersMM Stephanie Bogdin Gina Barbiero Carrie Crocco Jeff Jordan Dusty Nieman and Tom Houghton Photographers IIHIIIINIIHININIlIHlin Lonnie Bchunin Stephanie Man a Stephanie Marvidakis and Gary Allen Rix Brian Dawes IHIIIIINNIIIMNINININIINHNMINNININMNmmN dVlS0rMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM iSUSSn A FolStCT --J- ake Snack-Fetch- hursdaTMavI10Jl990 cr The Eagle It the official student publication of the College of Eastern Utah and It printed seen other Thursday fall winter and spring quarters Opinions expressed on this publication may or may not reflect the official opinion of CELTt administration faculty students or staff The Eagle office it located in Room I II of the Main building for summu sessions Townhouse and Sessions will be closed for the housing of students coming from out of staff writer If you want to fill some genual education classes or town for special workshops Rooms are $123 per session A plans to graduate early you may want to register for plan is optional but CEU encourages one of three summer sessions summu residents to use it because cooking facilities are limited A "The College of Eastern Utah will offer me class in plan plus room is $190 pu seuion "Most summu sessions classes are offered by request each core clus department during three summu sessions of college Tuition and fees for residents and non- If enough students desire a class the administration tries to offer the request The majority of classes for the residents are $333 for 9 credit hours" Leonard summu sessions are taught by Milter dean of continuing education said e CEU faculty The svuage class size for summu sessions is 0 The first session will be June 11 to July 13 the second is July 16 to Aug 17 and the third session Aug 20 students" Milter said Some students who take classes during summu sesto Sept 21 Registration for the first session is June sions 11 with each session are students who lack only a few credits to graduluting five weeks Some of the core classes available are introduction to ate from CEU or high school students who want an early chemistry principles of biology intermediate algetpa start cm their college educations Students who live in American national government issues in human devel- Carbon County and come home for the summu can take opment spreadsheet 1 music appreciation humanities classes to fill a group at anothu college or university Summu classes are avuaged in die cumuladve GPA through die arts Shakespeare word processing 1 and database management 1 the same as classes taken during fall winter and spring Housing is available at Aaron Jones Residence Hall quarters by Jenny Blackburn 10-me- al 10-me- al 12-1- full-tim- 13-2- |
