Show DEMOCRATS BILK CITY FOR TITHING Salt Lake City, Utah, Angnst 27, 1906. We, the undersigned, Thomas Rohinson, James Knight, Charles Harmon and D. H. Crowther, make the following statement: During the month of October, 1905, we worked in the Street Department nndcr S. M. 1. Seddon, Supervisor; m That in this month a peremptory demand was made on us for a contribution of ten (lUj per cent of our earnings to the "Democratic Campaign fund." Being Republicans, we refused to stand for the demand and a proposition was made thai an extra day's labor would be credited on the department payrolls, amounting to $4.00 each, and that this money should be held out by the City Treasurer or else paid over by the employees em-ployees to the clerk in the Street department ofllce. This arrangement was carried out, The City Treasurer deducted one day's pay as a campaign cam-paign contribution from Thomas Robinson, James Knight, Charles Harmon and D. H. Crowther, Crowth-er, paying their assessments direct into the City department. D. II . Crowther paid his by check,' dated November 3, 1905, and payable to Sam Seddon. Harmon and Knight paid m cash, receipts for same attached. The demand of a ten per cent assessment was accompanied with a threat that those who did not consent to pay would be "fired." We solemnly swear that the foregoing statement is true and that tho city treasury was depleted de-pleted by fraud to provide campaign funds for the Democratic party. . CHAS. HARMON, " JAS. KNIGHT, D. H. CROWTHER, THOMAS ROBINSON. (Subscribed and sworn to before me this 27th day of August, 1906.) . My commission expires B. F. JOHNSON, Notary. Public. |
