Show A18 Castle Valley Review, February 2009 HEALTH A Good Fight's Sleep Scott Lafee Why we (or mammals in general) sleep remains largely a mystery, but researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany have a theory: Parasites. They suggest that sleep (three to 20 hours a day in mammals) improves immune function, helping humans and other animals to fend off infectious organisms. "While awake, animals must be ready to meet multiple demands on a limited energy supply, including the need to search for food, acquire mates and provide parental care," said Brian Preston. "When asleep, animals largely avoid these costly activities and can thus allocate resources to the body's natural defenses." So next time the alarm clock goes off, hit the snooze button and continue to fight the good fight. Wellnews Get Me That. Stat! Recent research by the U.S. Department of Agriculture says some of the growth in childhood obesity rates can be attributed to calorie creep in home cooking. In other words, mom's meals are simply more fattening now. As proof, consider the iconic cookbook "The Joy of Cooking." Calories in its recipes have increased 63 percent since it was first published in 1937. Number Cruncher A large serving of french fries (169 grams) contains 539 calories, 259 from fat. That's 44 percent of the recommended total fat intake for a 2,000-calorie daily diet. It also contains zero milligrams of cholesterol; 328 mg of sodium (14 percent); 63 grams of total carbohydrates (21 percent); 6 grams of dietary fiber (24 percent); 1 gram of sugar and 6 grams of protein. Phobia of the Month Bathmophobia -- a fear of stairs or steep slopes Observation The more severe the pain or illness, the more severe will be the necessary changes. These may involve breaking bad habits, or acquiring some new and better ones. -- Self-help book author Peter McWilliams (1949-2000) Body of Knowledge Breast milk is 50 percent fat. Stories from the Waiting Room One day Dr. Joseph Bell (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's medical school mentor and the inspiration behind "Sherlock Holmes") assembled a group of students around a patient's bed to demonstrate the deductive method of diagnosis. "Aren't you a bandsman?" Bell asked the sick man. "Yes," replied the man. "You see, gentlemen, I am right," Bell declared. "It is quite simple. This man has a paralysis of the cheek muscles, the result of too much blowing at wind instruments. We need only inquire to confirm. What instrument do you play, my man?" Said the patient: "The big drum, doctor." Last Words Cold Harbor. June 3rd. I am dead. -- A note pinned inside the jacket of a dead Union soldier at the Battle of Cold Harbor. Thousands of Union soldiers were killed or wounded in a futile frontal assault against entrenched Confederate forces. It was common for soldiers to place a final note inside their jackets prior to an attack, particularly one considered to be suicidal. (Copyright 2009 Creators Syndicate Inc.) Castleview Hospital is working with the State of Utah Department of Health and the Center for Disaster Preparedness to obtain training for all its leaders. In 2009 healthcare leaders will attend additional classes in healthcare leadership emergency decision making, hazardous materials and decontamination training, preparation for the pandemic flu epidemic and management of an incident command center. Castleview Hospital also participates in training available at the state and local levels. All who attended felt this training was absolutely the best hands on training in a simulated hospital environment. The training also afforded an opportunity to network with healthcare leaders from across the nation and share experiences. The CDP provides federallyfunded, interdisciplinary training for emergency responders from across the United States and U.S. Territories, for 10 responder disciplines: Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Service, Fire Service, Governmental Administrative, Hazardous Materials, Healthcare, Law Enforcement, Public Health, Public Safety Communications and Public Works. Healthcare and Public Health training is conducted at the CDP’s Noble Training Facility, the nation’s only hospital facility dedicated to training hospital and healthcare professionals in disaster preparedness and response. Many training courses culminate at the CDP’s Chemical, Ordnance, Biological and Radiological Training Facility, the nation’s only facility featuring civilian training exercises in a true toxic environment, using chemical agents. The advanced hands-on training enables responders to effectively prevent, respond to, and recover from real-world incidents involving acts of terrorism and other hazardous materials. Responders attending CDP training are selected from the nation’s 11 million emergency responders. Training at the CDP ensures that responders gain critical skills and confidence to be better prepared to effectively respond to local incidents or potential WMD incidents.
