Channel 26 has been off the air since Jan. 1 and the county has been debating the merits of bringing it back after the transition to digital television on Feb. 18. The local channel was available over the airwaves and on cable Channel 10, but the county knew a decision needed to be made whether to keep it alive or not. The problem faced was the fact that to make the transition to digital would require the county to purchase upgrades totaling roughly $120,000, and, according to Commissioner Gary Kofford, they weren’t sure the channel was worth the expense. “It’s been a three year process going to digital TV and we failed Any $100 Off sofa and loveseat combo! Wide variety of styles to fund [the upgrade] in the past three years with the thinking that we weren’t getting out of the station what we wanted,” Kofford said. Prior to the station fading to black at the beginning of the year the county had advertised that it would be going off the air and asked viewers to provide the county feedback on the value they attached to the local channel. They received few comments and in the Jan. 27 meeting of the Emery County Commission it was reported that since a total of 26 calls were made by residents voicing support for the channel, and even some of those said while they valued the channel, they realized that it was probably best to let it go. “It was set up as a community service and it has not been a money making proposition,” said Kofford. “Originally the school had a camera and broadcast games, but that fell by the wayside. That’s nobody’s fault, except perhaps the three commissioners who didn’t do what they could to take care of it.” With Emery Telcom developing its own local television station to go along with the IPTV service it is planning to offer, Kofford said the underlying feeling of the commission was that they weren’t going to bring Channel 26 back. Susan Dorch of Castle Dale, who has had the contract to maintain the information on Channel 26, will be paid through February, which was an agreed item in the contract. Dorch had been paid $1,100 per month to update and maintain information on the local channel.
