Show Drowned in Bear River. The Treacherous O I d Waters of Bear River Claim Another Victim. (Desorot News Pleaso Copy.) Wednesday morning between the hours of 9 mid 10 o'clock, Soren C. Soronson,a well known and highly respected farmer of East Garland, was drowned in the Bear River just east of his farm in that locality His farm is about; one mile north of the Sugar Company's Central farm. From M. A. Rhodes, who assisted in recovering the body, wo gleaned the following particulars part-iculars : Mr. Sorensen, on horse-back, attempted to cross the river to get his cows that were on the oposite side of the stream. Near the place is a regular ford or crossing whore the water is 1 shallow. It is supposed he made a miscalculation a n d missed the ford about 50 feet f or did not want to bother with going through the wire fence on the oposite side of the river. The little black horso ho was riding came out of the river on the same side he went in, with-in with-in about two rods from the place and the dog brought out Soren-sen's Soren-sen's hat and laid it on the bank of the river. Mr. Sorensen Soren-sen never learned to swim and it is supposed that he was unaware un-aware that the horse was being rode into a place where the water was from 12 to in feet deep. Being unable to swim and uo help near, the unfortunate man was drowned. His wife and children and a number of neighbors came to the scene of the drowning and did all in their power to locate the body with no avail. Lator a number of EastGarlandTarm-ers EastGarlandTarm-ers proceeded to drag tho river with a horse-rake and after the sixth trial, were fortunate in bringing tho body to tho surface sur-face at about 1 o'clock. The news of his drowning spread like wild-fn o li rough town and a crowd of our citizens woro on on their way to assist in recovering re-covering the body when they learned that it hod been brought out of the water. W. A. Aciams, Mi. Isaacson, Mrs. Larson, the Ward Relief Socioty sisters and others assisted as-sisted in preparing the body for burial. Tho funeral services were held at the East Garland mooting house yesterday afternoon, after-noon, at 2 o'clock and the ro-.mains ro-.mains wore interred in the East Garland cemetery. A detailed account of the servicos will appear next week. We desire to express our heai'tfolt sympathies to the brereaved wife and children in this their hour of grief and sorrow. Deceased leaves a sorrowing wife and 10 children 7 boys and 3 girls, the youngest being 2 years old. His oldest son, Edwin Ed-win Sorensen, is now on a mission mis-sion in Norway and in all prob-ality prob-ality will be roleased to return home to take cave of the family. Mr. Sorensen was 48 years of age Inst January. He was born iu Denmark and camo to Utah when ho was 9 years old. He embraced the gospel in his native laud and has been a true Latter-day saint ever since. Port Ephrain, Sanpete county, was his place of residence for a number of years and lator he movd to Willow Creek and in November, 18SG was married to Miss Mary Bushardt. They have made this place their homo for the past five years. Considerable trouble has followed fol-lowed in the wake of the family. Mr. Sorensen sustained a badly bruised and torn hand while in the employe of the Sugar Co. the fhst year he came here, his-son his-son Edwin was laid up one whole summer by being injured injur-ed with the tines of a hay-fork and Mrs. Sorensen passed through the ordeal of laying her mothor to rest about 10 months ago and now the home is deprived de-prived of a kind father and a loving husband. |
