Show Utah Womans Review GOVERNOR RAMPTON MAYOR GARN ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Tis the season to be jolly, and as I look back over my first year in office as Mayor, I find there have been many things that have added a humorous side to many days. My secretary was upset one day when she received a call from a gentleman who had arranged for me to welvome a group to Salt Lake City. Where was the Mayor? He had been waiting at the door for over 20 minutes to meet me. My secretary could not understand what had delayed me and assured him I was on my way back to the office. The gentleman waiting at the door had missed both me and my remarks. During the holidays last year, I received a call at my home from a lady, very upset, because the turkey she had just purchased and was preparing, was missing a wing. What was I going to do about it? Last September, I had the opportunity of hosting a committee meeting of the U S. Conference of Mayors at a nearby ski resort. While waiting for several of the visiting mayors to arrive at the resort, I pitched in to help out the room service crew, who were somewhat un- derstaffed and overworke . It was amusing to see the surprised look on the face of a guest at the resort as I appeared at his door to deliver the towel and tissue he ahd requested. I could only shrug my shoulders and say, Well, the Mayors salary being what it is TO ALL THE WOMEN OF UTAH j&ristia on his side of the street broke off, while the bmaches of the trees across the street did not. One day, not too long ago, a Japanese exchange student brought all activity in the office to a halt as the girls tried desp arately to understa d what the young man wanted. He seemed to know only a few English words, which he was unable to organize into any sentence. Finally a Japanese language instructor at the University of Utah was located who spoke to him on the phone for several minutes, after which the young fellow fraciously offered his thanks and left. We can only assume he was able to get the information he needed. One day, while putting my garbage cans out for our areas a regularly scheduled pick-uslowed down motorist passing and inquired if I was the Mayor. I assured him that 1 was and he drove away feeling relief in the knowledge that the mayor has to put out his garbage too. p, A classic example of things that give us a chuckle during the day is the irate citizen who called and accused me of fixing it so during a heavy, wet snowstorm the branches of the trees It was t FRED BALL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE reported in the press recently that Salt Lakes Mayor Jake Gam was seen leaving the University of Utah - Arizona game after the third quarter With the score at 27 ato 0 in favor of Arizona, my son and I decided to beat the crowd. A little later a friend drove by my home, noticed me outside, and commented, Oh ye of little faith. Imagine - four Utah touchdowns in the final quarter of the game. If variety is the spice of life, the Mayors office is extremely well-seasone- d. I share these incidents with i you, the readers of the Womans Review, to let you have some insight into the lighter side of a day in the life of the Mayor. May you and yours have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and I look forward to more chuckles in 1973. E. J. GARN, Mayor J. EARL JONES CHIEF OF POLICE |
