The Songfest, featuring 5,000 singers from nearly 40 high schools throughout the Wasatch Front area, began at 8 pjn. in the Taberacle. Chairman of this year's songfest was David W. Evans. The famous Temple Sqauare Christmas lights were officiary turned on in a ceremony at the beginning of the Songfest by President Marion G Romney of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints, who also made welcoming remarks. While the IDS Church sponsors and provides facilities for the Songfest, church officials prefer that it be consid ered a community event, since singers from the shcools represent many different religious faiths and all contribute to the success of the event. However, the sound was piped into the Assembly Hall on Temple Square to accommodate the overflow crowds. Directing the Songfest again this year was Armont Willard-seveteran teacher and director of the Salt Lake Symphonic Choir. He conducted several numbers, along with some high school vocal teachers he invited as guest conductors for select numbers. The conductors included: C. Russell Fadley, American fork; Eugene S. Nye, Weber; Gordon L. steed, Layton; Norman R. n, - ' Wendell, Granger; Richard Torgerson, South; George Welch, Murray; Vernon Miller, Brighton; LeGrand Anderson, Granite; W. Karl Barton, Spring-villLeo A. Dean, Hillcrest; e; Kelly Pierce, Cypress; and Edward Freestone, Ben rator of the program. Father Elias Stephanopoulos of the Holy Trinity Greek Othodox Churchl delivered a Christmas message during the program; The next scheduled special Christmas-seaso- n event on the Square will be a new Christmas pageant, 'The Light of the World," Saturday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Dec. 16, 19 and 20, at 8 p.m. nighly. The pageant is sponsored by the Primary Association and features 7S0 costumed participants icluding international carolers from the Swiss, Japanese, Mexican and Lamanite branches of the Church and a professional brass choir. On Sunday, December 17, at 2 p.m., The Salt Lake Oratorio i Society will present its annual rendition of Handel's "The Messiah." Thursday, December 21 at 8 pjn., the Salt Lake Mormon Tablernacle Choir will present its annual Lnnstmas concert-Whil- e the Choir travels the U. S. and the world widely, this will be one of the few occasions when Salt Lake area residents have an opportunity to see the famous organization in concert. Richard P. Condie will conduct the Choir. And the Mormon Youth Symphony and Chorus will perform in concert Saturday, December 23, at 8 p.m. Jay Welch is the director. |
