Show The NewspaperThursday, January 14, 1982PageB3 Local skiers capture top sports in Payday Downhill When the favorite wins a race, that's news. But when a long shot comes out of the pack and almost beats the favorite at his own game, he tends to steal much of the limelight. Such a scenario unfolded last weekend, when 15-year-old Rolfe Sandberg pulled out all the stops in an effort to win the Payday Downhill, a Junior Olympic qualifying race, at the Park City Ski Area. Sandberg's best performances perfor-mances on the Park City Ski Team have been steady, but unspectacular. But spectators spec-tators last weekend witnessed wit-nessed a different Sandberg: one who was willing to push Racquetball tourney So thai tropny you won at the Locals Only tournament tourna-ment is getting tarnished and you're looking for a little competition to put the edge back in your game. Well here it is: the Park City New Year's Classic Racquetball Tournament. Tour-nament. The tournament will be held Jan. 28-30 at the Park City Racquet Club. Organized Orga-nized by Craig Kunkel, the club's new racquetball racquet-ball pro, the competition is open to everyone from the top Salt Lake City pros to the newest novices. novic-es. "Rolfe seems to be getting up for the races this year, taking the races seriously," observed Coach Bob Marsh. Sandberg didn't win. But his second-place finish both Saturday and Sunday makes him a definite contender for a place on the Junior Olympic Olym-pic squad. A similar situation occurred oc-curred in the women's race, where Andrea Peterson, another an-other consistent finisher, went all out to catch front-' runner Tori Pillinger. Her effort paid off with a second-place finish on Saturday, Satur-day, but she fell on the lower part of the course Sunday and didn't complete the race. Pillinger ended up in the top spot both Saturday and Sunday. In the men's division, divis-ion, Jason Lawson also posted convincing victories both Saturday and Sunday. Pillinger and Lawson are among the most promising prospects on the park City Ski Team. "Our kids did as well as we expected, and better," Marsh said, "although some of our younger kids didn't fare well on Payday because of the long flats." He explained that the smaller racers were at a disadvantage because they didn't have the momentum to carry them through the flat areas. On the other hand, he said, the relatively gentle course can help build the confidence of the skiers. "In some respects, for the older guys, it really helps their skiing," he said. In the JIV (10- and ll-year-old) class, Park City's Stephanie Palmer was the top performer, finishing 23rd overall on Saturday and 22nd on Sunday, posting times which put her ahead of many older competitors. ' Among the JIV boys, Park City's Tyler Tebbs and Bret Johnson shared top honors. Tebbs finished in 37th place on Saturday while Johnson was 42nd Sunday. Palmer, Tebbs and Johnson John-son were technically i'j... fied to race on the sliwter course arranged for the JIV and JV (ages 9 and under) competitors. But they chose to compete with the older group. In the JIV-JV race, Park City's Shannon Nobis posted the fastest time, nipping Nordic Valley's Falesha Favero by .17 of a second. In the boy's division, the top f t At rJC I ' I MM:-;-1-:: S i y. v. Bret Johnson finished first in his age group Sunday. spot went to Gary Gibson of Snow Basin. In second place was Danny Tebbs of Park City. The schedule now calls for the JIV and JV racers to compete in a slalom race at Snowbird this weekend. Meanwhile, some of their older counterparts will he entered in the Western Region or-Am Mualifiving races. That series begins in Sun Valley Jan. 17 - 20, moves to Park City Jan. 22 and 23, then wraps up in Solitude Jan. 24 and 25. Among those eligible to compete in that series are Tori Pillinger, Nicki Koch, Robert Ayers, and Jason Lawson. Alternates include Scott Williams and Matias Alvarez.
