PIONEER hAHN UTAHN UT AHN DIES ON COAST One of ot Utah's most prominent social and civic workers and widow of ot the late David Eccles empire builder of or the early west Mrs Bertha Jensen Eccles died at her home in Los Angeles O. O Cal CeJ Tuesday at the age of 78 after an illness of or several years I A special dispatch to The Salt I Lake Telegram said Wednesday the body of ot Mrs Eccles will be brought to Ogden for funeral services and burial No arrangements yet have been definitely completed A pioneer of ot Utah Mrs migrated to Huntsville in 1867 During DurIng During Dur Dur- ing the past several years she had spent her summers at her home in Ogden and her winters in Los An An- geles Since Mr death in 1912 Mrs irs Eccles had been prominently Identified with church and social work in the state She was a leader lead lead- er In the Child Culture society the Martha society the L. L D. D S. S Relief society and the Daughters of or Utah Pioneers She also served as a member of ot the board of or regents of or the University University sity of Ut Ut 1 under an appointment made by former Governor Simon Bamberger While residing In Los Angeles she took an important part partin in L. L D D. S. S work there Born in Denmark January January January Jan Jan- uary 30 1857 a daughter of Christen and Marcia Maren Andersen Jensen Mrs Eccles crossed the plains by ox oxcart oxcart oxcart cart as a child with her family who were converts to the L. L D. D S S. church The family first settled in Huntsville Huntsville Huntsville Hunts- Hunts ville where Mrs Eccles attended school and when 26 years of age David Eccles December 27 1875 in the old Salt Lake City endowment house although during I most of the rest of Mr ir Eccles' Eccles life I they made their home homo in Ogden I Within a few tew years after their marriage David Eccles had built up i ione one of the west's greatest fortunes owning extensive lumber mills sugar companies stock companies and identified with 56 industrial In Institutions Institutions institutions In- In and 20 bank Widow of a man who from extreme extreme ex ex- I eX-I poverty built a fortune of more than Mrs frs Eccles saw a small sawmill which her husband husband husband hus hus- band owned grow and prosper and eventually become one of or the great series of such mills In 1881 Mr Eccles went to Oregon where he established sawmills in the great forests of that state He later entered entered en en- the insurance business and andin andin I in 1898 organized the first sugar I company compan He organized the Amalgamated Amalgamated Amal Amal- i Sugar company and the Utah Construction company compan being president of both concerns Mr ir Eccles' Eccles companies built a portion of what is now the Los Angeles Angeles Angeles An An- geles d Salt Lake Lalee railroad He re reorganized reorganized reorganized re- re organized the street railroad systems systems ss s's terns of oC Ogden and Logan Mrs irs Eccles devoted much of her time to civic affairs and charities in Utah She was the founder of Girl Scout work in Utah and was aw awarded the highest honors for tor her work by the National Girl Scout association She organized several societies for tor children and for years was active in the work of ot the Children's Childrens Childrens Children's Childrens Children's Chil Chil- drens dren's Aid society She had been awarded several high honors by civic groups for tor her labors in behalf behal of Ogden welfare or organizations Surviving are arc six daughters Mrs Llla Lila Eccles Brimhall professor protessor of ot speech at the University of Utah Mrs R.
