Stewart swept to victory in the municipal election Tuesday ousting Earl J. Glade from his 12 years as mayor. City Commissioners L. C. Rom-ney Rom-ney and Grant M. Burbidge were re-elected by handsome margins over Frank A. Yeamans and Ben H. Smith. Salt Lake City policemen and firemen were given a wage increase in-crease by an initiative ordinance that passed by a yes vote of 25,701 against 14,418 negative ballots. Stewart unhorsed Glade on a platform embracing a vision countywide in scope, compatible with the growth of growth of greater Salt Lake, and on the grounds three terms are long enough for a mayor to remain in office. The mayoral vote was: Stewart, 21,223; Glade 19,731; Rex L. Christensen (write-in candidate) 3191. Romney led the field with 30,-807 30,-807 votes; Burbidge polled 27,552; Yeamans 14,705, and Smith 11,795. The Glade - Stewart battle brought out unprecedented numbers num-bers of voters in the off-year elec- tion. The Republican dominated Salt Lake County commission now has until January 1 to nominate a candidate to succeed Stewart by appointment of Governor J. Bracken Brack-en Lee.
