Show I MR TAYLOR RATIFIED I Colored People and Others Talk I I at the Q A R Hall NUT QUITE A LOVE FEAST e BRYAX tD 31JCIM EY ELEMENTS GOMJ3 IN CONFLICT The Irrepressible Colonel Hawkins One Colored Gentleman Declares For the Bimetallism of SlHer The Candidate Acts as Janitor and Cites a Very IucidJ Explanation Expla-nation of the Australian Ballot Sj stem What was termed a general ratification ratifica-tion of the colored people was held last evening in the G A R hall for the purpose of expressing approval of the nomination of one of their number Mr W W Taylor by the Republican county convention for election to the lower house of the state legislature There were probably at the outside 75 colored voters present the bulk of II the colored portion of the audience being I be-ing soldiers from Fort Douglas while a fair sprinkling of white people were In attendance The main object of the meeting the ratification of JMr Taylor was in a I great measure lost sight of the feature being something In the nature of a row between the Bryan and McKitley factions ot the Republican party each of which contended for supremacy THE CANDIDATE The candidate was there of course and made himself useful In escorting people to seats as they filed in Mr Taylor in this regard was politeness personified and smiled and beamed affably on his friends colored and otherwise From these good offices he desisted i for a short period and mount moun lug tIe restrum cauea tne meeting to order and Introduced P W Nelson as president That gentleman made a few Introductory remarks and announcing that speeches would be limited to five minutes called on Harry Joseph who said he came to glory in the fact that the Republicans could rely on the colored people for their votes and he came also to pay tribute to the colored candidate on the Republican ticket It had been said that I took 20 hours for the Republican convention to nominate the worst county ticket ever put before the people of this county but as a matter of fact the reason it took so long to make the nominations was that the convention wanted to get the best men the party afforded Mr Taylor was a leader among his people and the colored people had always been at the beck and call of the Republican party and of course would be now when they had been rewarded by the nomination of Mr Taylor Mr Joseph was launching launch-ing out to tell of the ills the Democrats Demo-crats had brought on the country when time was called and with the remark that he was for harmony he sat down and let l It go at that REPUBLICAN GRATITUDE G W Moyer emphasized the fact that the colored people as a rule were not bondholders but had to work for a living but nevertheless the Republican Republic-an party owed a great debt of gratitude grati-tude to them for the way they voted He thought It was most Important that the legislature Be Republican because alter the money question was settled the people would need a United States senator who would stand for I protection against free trade They Would also want a congressman who would take a similar course He thought it was possible pos-sible to find a Republican senator who was as sound on the silver question asa as-a Democrat He favored good government govern-ment and let it < jo at that JAKE GREENEWALD Jake Greeneuald was called for by the chair at the instance of Billy OMeara and here the fun began tor Jake Is a goldbug and does not hesitate hesi-tate to say that he Is for McKInley and on this occasion maintained his reputation repu-tation He started out by saying he didnt want to talk for the reason that the last speech he made was for the Liberal party in the campaign when that party met is Waterloo and he had a forboding that he would prove a hoodoo for his party this time The audience insisted that he make a speech anyway and Jake said he knew nothing but Republicanism straight and would vote the ticket straight from the eagle down and advised others to do likewise The beehive and the 16 to 1 he had no use for The Republicans didnt want no foreign influence didnt want no kings and that was why they nominated nomi-nated Holbrook for congress He had congess no use for Republicans who were going to vote for the Bryan electors they I would get fooled anyway as free silver 1 could only come from the Republican party the fountain of all good We wanted confidence more than free silver ver and McKinley had a corner on that commodity Jake said he was for the woodchuck whatever he meant by that nobody knew but himself and was willing to let It go at that THE ANCIENT OF DAYS Then the ancient and venerable Colonel Hawkins of the Populist beard mounted the rostrum and told how he owned 175 colored people in Alabama befo de wa and gave them all their freedom and 5100 each in gold and had been called a goldbug ever since The colonel was greatly disgusted dis-gusted because there were no pictures of McKinley adorning the walls of the hal and after practically calling for oa chromo of the major a colored lady produced one and threw In another of Hobart which under the directions of the colonel were pinned on the wall and were greeted with a faint cheer Thus fortified Mr Hawkins sailed right Into the Bryan Republicans and was getting along swimmingly when time was called He took no notice of the call and went right ahead with the remark that no Bryan man could cal him down nO indeed In-deed He wasnt built that way nothing noth-ing but the united strength of the colored col-ored people there could call him down He was wound up and had to run He had been a miner for 31 years and got along very well without free silver anyway silver would not g up In price even with free coinage declared the colonel Time was again dalled but the speaker declared he couldnt make a spech In five Or ten minutes The Tribune had slurred him in a recent article and any reporter that would throw mud at an old soldier ought to be rolled In the mud and If he could only fins that reporter he would give him what he deserved Time time sit down were shouted from all over but the colonel got Into his anecdotage and insisted on telling a story and after the candidate had pointedly suggested that the chair compel Mr Hawkins to subside he called for three cheers for McKinley and sat down The cheers were given with some warmth and then Major Stanton from among the audience called for three cheers for Bryan which wad responded to with equal vigor The colonel was tor mud and let It go a that BIMETALLISM OF SILVER P H Robinson a colored gentleman took the stand He declared he wanted to be a Republican if he died and a hurled for I Some jwere f r free silver arid some werent Those who were not believed In double standard He didnt know which was right buta 1k he was sure he waste Republican believed be-lieved in the bimetallism of sliver would vote for McKlnlay and the graveyard grave-yard and let it go at that COLORED PEOPLE GO BACK ON HIM C E Stanton spoke a few words In favor of the candidate whose election he thought the Republican party owed to the coloredpeople He had no quarrel quar-rel with those who were going to vote for McKinley but for his own part he was going to vote for the Bryan electors elect-ors and he was as good a Republican as any man in1 the land Some colored voters had declared they wouldnt vote for Taylor but that was all wrong and any color perixm who would not vote for the colered candidate ought to be ashamed of himself Mr Stanton then said a good word for Al Reese forwhose ability and good character he vouched In the strongest possible way He stood tor Bryan Taylor Tay-lor and Reese and let It go at that THE CANDIDATE AGAIN The candidate was the last speaker He was glad to see so many at his meeting and heartily solicited their good nature In the name and for the people of Salt Lake city he welcomed the regiment of cOlored soldiers who had come to Salt Lake and told how the people were delighted at their coming com-ing and had determined to make It pleatant for them He was sure the soldiers would enjoy the change coming as they did from a place where no civilization existed He thanked the people of Salt Lake for nominating him to the position of a lawmaker and pledged his sacred honor that he would deliver the solid colored vote 760 the of to Republican party partMr Mr Taylor then proceeded t > instruct the people how to vote on the Australian Aus-tralian system dwelling mainly on the difficulties they would encounter If they attempted to vote anything but a straight ticket He was going to vote the straight ticket himself but he adroitly omitted to say whether he would put his emblem as he called it opposite the eagle or the 16 to 1 beehive bee-hive and when plied with questions as to whether he would vote for the McKinley wheter Kinley or Bryan electors he refused to answer but went on enumerating the candidates specially mentioning Agnes Ag-nes M Cannon sr Norrell and Cherry a deserving of support His attention I I was called t the fact that Ijjorreu ana I Cherry were Democrats upon which j Mr Taylor acknowledged that he had i made a great mistake and it wouldnt j dO to vote for no Democrats Proceeding Pro-ceeding with his elucidation of the ballot bal-lot he got more and more bewildered I I and finally gave up by telling the audience aud-ience the only way to do was to put I their emblem so a to vote some j straight ticket and let it go at that I This closed the oratorical portion of I the evening and the colored ladles and gentlemen retired for refreshments which were served in an anteroom I The night was concluded by a ball at which the band of the Twentyfourth regiment colored furnished music as they had done at intervals between the I speeches earlier in the evening |
