Show AS TO FRUIT GROWING now is the time for those that contemplate putting out orchards to send in their orders so they will be on me file and that there will be no delay As aa a general thing parties wait until spring before ordering with the result that there is a rush and the nurseries are notable not able to fill all of the orders until late after you have sent seat your orders see gee that your ground is fertilized now is a good time to haul manure as aa the ground is frozen and will not be injured by travel traveling iniz over it this i it th the WRY way I 1 set out an orchard and handle it I 1 set my apples thirty two feet apart each way if you can water north and south set peaches between the same way set the way you irrigate here we can let them that is the peach trees stand 8 to 10 years then cut them out before cutting my peaches out I 1 have some more young trees that will come in bearing my mj pe ach orchard la Is the same pears aud aad plume lo in setting getting I 1 dig the hole bole large enough and deep e enough dough to set the tree a little deeper than when in the nursery take the tree by the top and place it io in the tb bole the same side aide to the south that it stood in the eursery you oan can easily tell if you look carefully us as you put in the dirt mix a little manure in atle dirt rare raise the roots out from the tree as the dirt will crowd them down never push the dirt aown but leave it as loose as you can it if water is handy take a bucket an turu turn water ln in on top of the dirt then tue dirt din will around the roots when I 1 set out a low few acres I 1 run water along a turro vr then see that all tire are straightened up and throw dirt on OB top ut of the wet dirt to keep it from cracking there to is no regulus rule you can go by about irrigating as an it depends on the soil and rid weather sometimes Home times a wind will dry the ground moie in one day than a week of hot weather will at other times I 1 examine the ground aud and determine when a tree needs watering for it can be oia injured as much by watering too much as by not enough given too much water the tro tree will form knots on the ibe roots and the leaves leave will become knotty and yellow I 1 raise produce between my trees when aimala but never allow it to grow close clone to the tree aft the latter grows I 1 narrow down the crop between never nover sowing sewing wheat or any small grain the rho cultivating around the trees should be shallow I 1 use a seven tooth cultivator and when I 1 spread manure I 1 use a emall plow and plow as shallow as aa will cover the manure now to make a tree the right shape is a task I 1 have had the betit bent success in growing a tree straight and It the large limbs trimmed the first year or two then out cut the top lop oft in the spring the tree will put out branches all along the trunk you can rub these off and make such a head us me suits butts you I 1 out my trees back every year as they grow so thrifty they will not hold the fruit A tree should never be allowed to gro grow so 0 much that it needs to be propped the limbs should be beaul out off so they can hold the fruit I 1 tried to grow some apples small for botelo I 1 lot let the trees go with out pruning anti and did not thin them out the consequence was I 1 had a small email apple and tasteless not fit to eat when you irrigate as a soon eoon am aa a cultivator will work free you should bould run over the ground you will find it to be of great benefit it keeps the ground moist longer and keeps the woods downs down which never should be allowed to grow in an oro orchard baril any more than in a corn field bold never let alfalfa grow in an orchard after your trees get large you can grow peas they do not take any elements elemen tB that the tree needs but help the soil A good way is ie to let t em bern jay on the ground where you have chickens they will gather them and the vines are loft left on the ground to help hold bold the leaves from being blown away some people think if they run water along side of the tree that to in all that to is needed a great mistake for all the is left dry is ia of no use to the tree tut lut it drapal amp from the roots and it escapes escapee in the air the ground wants wanta to be kept moist and a a near alike as aa possible po ible if you let it got get too dry so as to stop we growth of the tree irwill it will the tree why shot should utah people be eating california f uit when we can raise hotter and plenty fruit should be the che idest diet d lot we have hav but as it is now it is ii considered a luxury I 1 oa can grow fruit shealor than a man luau can potatoes the average person haw has no idea of the amount of fruit snipped irom from califor isla ta unless he is in a 4 position to know I 1 know of towns in im colorado where they receive from two to three car loads a lewk each fruit is isdo delivered livered from the he sacramento valley to leadville adville JLe colo tor for lew less thau I 1 can irom chomp son on a distance of a little over a hundred boiles we want tu to combine and run a fruit and vegetable t aln ain I 1 am satisfied we oan can make inake arrange ments with the B R G W and D B R G railroads it if we do not make up we will be left behind one oae thing to la to raise fruit the next thing to Is to sell bell it to advantage from the now new gold fields there are parties returning every day some turned around before getting there tut lut others are still going there is ia considerable prospecting going on here in our valley but the difficulty is there is in too much dirt mixed with the gold the same thing here on the grand river and on the he creek that runs through our valley as on the san ban juan 0 W MOAB grand co utah jan 24
