often in past seasons when whelk the roads in tue valley below would be dry and dusty snow would cover the ground in this more elevated valley to 10 the depth of several feet this winter howe however verg has so far been an exception to the general rule as there la barely snow enough here at present to afford a sleigh ride in driving up from ogden the dinst I 1 found the road dry and almost dusty to in places until I 1 reached the he mouth of the canyon thence for the next three miss bodies it was slippery and hard with att until the snow limits were reached near the point where the hermitage three miles and HUdi huntsville eville is situated about two miles bave the head of the canyon the road only crosses the river twice oden valley is about fifteen miles longs long extending from norta to 60 beast and has an average width of bout four miles its mean altitude above sea level is about feet or nearly arly feet above the great salt lake biake consequently only the hardier lode of fruit principal settlement in ogden valley is beautifully situated on an elevated bench lying between the south fork and spring creek the town is laid out in regular eight acre blocks the streets cressi crossing tig each other at right angles facing the public square from the north stands the huntsville meetinghouse a flue brick structure with a lofty and finely shaped tower on the south end immediately east of this lies a recently erected two story brick schoolhouse one of the finest country school build ings in the count county and wes weal of the public square stands the old rook meetinghouse which was used for many years for meetings school and social purposes there are quite a number of handsome and commodious dwellings in huntsville and nearly every settler has large and surrounding the pub lio lie square which constitute the village of eden where the school house the he only public building in the place is situated the village lies about four f 1 11 and a half m miles it as from hants Honts huntsville ville ita iba north northwesterly westerly wee terly direction and about the same distance from ogden as its neigh 1 I h boring town the E eden jen ward whim near future with such good neighbors as eden on the south and paradise on the north it certainly has advantages which no other settlement ui in utah can boast of elders judkins Jud klus wade and ferrin constitute the bishopric of liberty ward which embraces about half the mem members berv that formerly constituted the eden ward before it was divided it was wag in the south portion of that district ot country now included in the liberty ward when the first permanent settlers of ogden valley erected their pioneer cabins in 1869 1859 previous to that time the valley was utilized as ae a summer herd hard ground for the benefit of the people of ogden and vicinity and for many years it was considered too cold for actual settlement but since that time the lord has tempered the elements in favor of his people and several kinds of grain fruit and vegetables vage tables which in early utah days men raised with difficulty even in our lower and warmest valleys now do well in this
