Show Souvenir Edition Page 9 mm John Arenskov . John Arenskov John Arenskov took up ceramics as a self-taught hobby 12 years ago. At the time he was doing just about anything to earn a buck, from working oil rigs to driving a taxi cab in Hawaii. Now Arenskov, aided by borther Pete, makes a living from his art. . . He moved from California to Utah nearly five years ago. Pete followed two years later. He's a glazier who how handles han-dles administrative chores for the Arenskov Aren-skov business. John Arenskov is entered in the festival for the 11th year, so he qualifies as a bonafide veteran. It's an excellent event, he said. "The town is an attraction by itself, it-self, and it's a good-selling show for artists." ar-tists." I The show has also helped to improve the cultural climate in the state. "Utah is about three or four years behind the rest of the country," he said. "Federal aid for the arts has also helped. " Much of his work is custom made. "I get a lot of business by word-of -mouth," he said. "Somebody will see one of my pieces in a friend's home." His work is sought by architects, interior designers and other professionals. He is known for ornamental lamps and planters made with meticulous attention to detail. And he prides himself on making pieces that will serve a purpose even while they are beautiful. "It's nice to be able to look at something and have it be functional and also a piece of art," said the artist. An Arenskov tradition at the festival is his unusal experiment with some new motif. "I'm doing some Western-style carving car-ving this time," he said. He's decorating the ceramics with the kind of ornamental, flared lines you often see carved on leather wallets. He used to attend up to 25 or 30 festivals a year, but lately he's content to bring his works to private showings or private galleries. After this year's Park City festival, however, Arenskov will be traveling to shows in Colorado and St. . George. :'. WAYLON JENNINGS Jessi Colter & The Crickets 5:00 P.M.
