J Open seven days a week 649-9066 INTERNATIONAL Beirut, Lebanon A Saturday ceasefire between bet-ween Lebanon and Israel was disrupted within five hours by attacks launched by a radical Palestinian guerrilla group. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a sub-group under un-der the Palestine Liberation Organization, took credit for the first truce shellings against northern nor-thern Israel and Christian enclaves in southern Lebanon. PLO leader Yasser Arafat has abided by the chaky truce for four days. But PLO leaders accused ac-cused Israel of violating the cease-fire when two of their jets flew a reconnaissance mission over Beirut Sunday. "We consider it a violation, but will act with restraint," said a PLO spokesman. The truce was mediated by U.S. envoy Phillip Habib after 15 days of border fighting. Tehran Prime Minister Mohammed Ali Rajai seemed headed to a landslide victory in a presidential election marred by the killings of 11 revolutionary guards.- Rajai was elected to replace his hated rival, Abolhassen Bani-Sadr, who was believed to be leading the opposition from the Iranian mountain, although late reports claim he is in Paris. Rajai and his three opponen-were opponen-were all named by the ruling Islamic Republican Party, and his election was insured whan all his rivals made public statements supporting him. The 11 guards were killed on election day by gun and bomb attacks. Meanwhile, the gover-ment gover-ment said 60 members of the anti-Khomeini Mojahideen Khalq party were arrested after a conspiracy was found "to destroy or steal ballot boxes." Darmstadt, Germany What do you call a flying Peeping Tom? A peeping Huey! German nudists are up in arms because they're being peered at by American soldiers in Huey helicopters. The pilots say it's just a coincidence that they are engaged in normal, low-level flight training over nudist colonies in several lakes and woodland areas. "It's absolutely terrifying... to have a helicopter helicop-ter hover above you," one nude woman said. The nudists have posted protest letters to U.S. officials of-ficials and military bases. One local newspaper said the victims should carry binoculars to get the helicopter numbers, but one aghast nudist said, "They (other nudists) would kill you if you brought binoculars." Havana, Cuba Dictator Fidel Castro claimed the U.S. responsible for a recent outbreak of dengue fever and crop failures in Cuba. A State Department spokesman scoffed at Castro's claim, and pointed out the Commerce Depar-ment Depar-ment has approved the export of 300 tons of a pesticide to Cuba which can be used against the fever mosquitoes. On the 28th anniversary of his rise to power, Castro directed suspicion at the U.S. in a speech, citing past plots aimed at him. He said 270,000 Cubans had caught the dengue in the past week. Said Washington spokesman Fischer, "The Cuban government has always tried to blame the U.S. for its failures..." London Prince Charles, 32-year-old heir to the British throne, married 20-year-old Lady Diana Spencer Wednesday in St. Paul's Cathedral. The ceremony was beamed live to the United States by all three commercial networks for the benefit of those who chose to stay up late or get up early. The new Princess of Wales handled the pressure like a veteran, making only one faux pas during the wedding ceremony (during the vows, she referred to the bridegroom as Phillip Charles instead of Charles Phillip) . Robert Neumann, who had been a Saudi Arabian ambassador am-bassador for two months, was reportedly fired over critical remarks he made about Haig in private to Rep. Sen. Charles Percy. White House spokesman are saying, however, that Neumann has left for personal reasons among them, the health of his wife. One informant said Neumann and Haig were separated by policy differences. Neumann is supposedly unhappy about the government's delay in asking Congress to approve a sale of five AWAC planes to Saudi Arabia. The sale has aroused opposition from Jewish allies in the states, who fear the planes might be used as weapons against Israel. Washington On the eve of a legislative showdown over his program in the House, President Reagan went to the airwaves to urge voters to support the GOP "tax cut" program over the "tax increase" offered by the Democrats. Reagan used charts to explain the difference between the programs. His plan calls for a three-year, 25 across-the-board reduction reduc-tion in tax rates, with indexing of the taxes to begin in 1985 to prevent automatic increases caused by inflation. The Democratic plan calls for two-year cuts of 15, with extra relief to middle and low incomes, and no thii d-year tax cut unless the economy improves. Reagan argued that the planned deficits by Democrats would be a virtual guarantee against a third tax cut. Chicago and Boston Anybody ready for "Reefer Madness, Part II?" Conflicting claims about the harmfulness of marijuana are once again being thrown at each other. The American Medical Association said this week that frequent use of marijuana over long periods leads to problems in the brain, circulatory cir-culatory system, heart, lungs, and nervous system. Driving skills are impaired even with moderate use, the AMA charged, and large doses of THC, the active ingredient in pot, leads to hallucinations and delusions. The AMA also said grass leads to greater risk of bronchitis and en-physema en-physema than tobacco. The same day, "The Boston Globe" reported a University of California study had found pot doesn't impair brain function. The; researchers studied a religious sect that smokes marijuana in quarter- and half-ounce cigars. After administering ad-ministering psychological tests to the subjects, one scientist said, "If I hadn't known these people smoked marijuana, I would never have concluded that there was any impairment whatsoever." what-soever." Denver Easy Rider Peter Fonda rode for a fall after he took steps to protect the good name of his sister Jane. Fonda allegedly whipped out a knife at Stapleton International Airport and cut up a cardboard sign, saying "Feed Jane Fonda to the Whales." The sign was carried by pro-huclear pro-huclear demonstrators.' Mount Rainier Park, Washington Climber Mike Darland strained to the top of Mount Rainier only to find his wife Cindy waiting for him at the top in a lawn chair with a drink in each hand. Larry Heggerness, who describes his friend Darland as "a real macho type," thought it would be a good joke if his wife beat him to the top of Rainier. Cindy ascended with help from six strong climbers, but even so, was fatigued by the ascent. "I couldn't believe I could experience such fatigue and pain and still live," she said. 66 would it CO apftmeitf..?99 Start with the books, the linens, the silver.
