Show Governors Would Probe Deep Into Cost of Living SALT LAKE. Aug 19. A change of program arranged for the firs! busi ness session of (he governors conference confer-ence which opened here this morninp pi .eluded discussion of state budgets winch wa' to have occupied the attention atten-tion of governors at the morning session and the subjects of living costs received consideration at both morning and afternoon sessions. "Discover the cause and provide the lemedy." This is the result of the determine tions of the governors today to devise ways and means by which the BtatSS may co-operate with the federal government gov-ernment in its efforts to reduco the cost of living. Find the causes of th high cost of foodstuffs and other commodities com-modities and the remedy will be provided pro-vided without any great difficulty, wis the sentiment of the governors. To this end a committee of seven was ap pointed to go to Washington to confer with the president as in the best course of action to be taken. In offering the resolution for the appointment ap-pointment of the committer. Governor Frederick D Gardner of Missouri sal 1: "Certainly there are enough brains in the conference to find out just whit is the ause of the high cost of Ihir.tc and to provide the remedy for it. The. problem is n national problem and must be handled as a national problem prob-lem by the federal government, with the state co-operating." Resolutions Are Adopted. The resolution which was unani-mouslyl unani-mouslyl adopted follows: "The governors of the states of the United States, in conference at Salt Salt Lake, this nineteenth day of Aug ust, 1919, declare: "That we recognize in the high and in many instances the exeessie cost of necessities through the nation th cause of much of the unrest now pre ailing: "That is is highly important that prompt and effecthe action be taken by federal and state authorities to the end that the situation may be remedied reme-died ; "That it is, therefore, the sense of this conference of governors that. In addition to exerei.slngt all powers of authority vested in the states, a committee com-mittee of spven governors be seleete ! to forthwith go to Washington to confer con-fer with the president with a view of ascertaining in what manner the states may best co-operate with the national government in remedying the situation and at once advise the governors of the several states of the results of the'.r conference with the president and, if in their Judgment necessary, aga:n convene this conference at a time and place to be determined by them." |
