So many thousands had gathered fur a night of merrymaking in the hotels j and restaurants of the West End that when closing time came transport-) tion systems were unable to take them home. As all those trains stopped 1 soon after midnight, there was nothing i left for thousands but to spend the night in tho streets. Great crowd.-, gathered in the vicinity of Piccadilly-, Leicester Square and Covent Garden j stations, and as it was raining gently the prospect was dismal. "Are we downhearted.'' shouted a leather lunged sailor, and instantly came a thunderous response from scores of his comrades in the crowd,' which was increased by answering' shouts from soldiers and civilians.
