Show There are people in whose society a great man can "let himself down," and be merely an affable fellow mortal, without fear of familiarity begetting contempt in their minds. But there are others in whose presence Joy must always be seen seated upon his throne in state, with his thunder-bolts at hand, also he runs the risk of being slapped upon the back and hailed as a "Jupe" by some nincompoop who has no means of recognizing the god, save by his eagle and his thunderbolts. Pounded oyster shells scattered around the shelves in pantries, will, it is said, exterminate roaches, as they will not cross them. Cookies.-Two eggs, one cup sugar, a little more than one-half cup butter, three tablespoonfuls of sour cream, one large teaspoon soda. While traveling in foreign countries the American is surprised at the discourtesy shown to women in crowded places-at the railroad stations, ferries and so on. With us the case is different. In the most dense throng, the comfort of women is considered. In Paris, that elegant city of superfluity where Frenchmen are supposed to be born polite, the attention shown toward women in the ? streets is not nearly so considerate as in New York. But, on the other hand, women, in their turn, are not over courteous. When in need a gentleman offers his seat to one whom he supposes is a lady, she rarely says "thank you," or makes the slightest acknowledgment of his courtesy. There is nothing new in this remark; the same thing has been said so frequently that no one will dispute its general correctness. The writer was discussing this peculiarity of the female traveling public to an intelligent gentleman recently, who gave some very original experiences in regard to it. "I do not think I am an impolite man," he said, "and I will not concede to anyone a higher respect for woman. But I have made it a rule never to give by seat to any female who is not a work-girl, or a poor woman. They are far more grateful and say and look their thanks more really than do their richly-clothed sisters in more comfortable circumstances, but who do not condescend to open their mouths." It is questionable whether, in view of such and experience a man is morally compelled to put himself to inconvenience. It is an act of courtesy, not right; and if it is not appreciated, men are justified in declining to make the sacrifice. "I Don't Want that Stuff," In what a lady of Boston said to her husband when he brought home some medicine to cure her of sick headache and neuralgia which had made her miserable for fourteen years. At the first attack thereafter, it was administered to her with such good results that she continued its use until cured, and was so enthusiastic in ? praise, that she induced twenty-two of the best families in her circle to adopt it as their regular family medicine. That "stuff" is Hop Bitters-Standard. Reliable Testimony. Where testimonials give the residence of the parties it is an easy matter for any person to verify them. Thousands of people from all parts of the Pacific Coast can and have expressed the opinion that there is no other article in the world equal to PHOSPHATE SOAP for common toilet use. A great many people have tested the soap for skin diseases. Among others we give the following from parties who have thoroughly tested PHOSPHATE SOAP. OAKLAND, Cal., April 5, 1880. STANDARD SOAP COMPANY-Gents: Some two or three months ago, I had a boy about two years old that had suffered for a year with a severe eruption on the head and face, caused by teething. The child was in such misery that it would often be awakened out of sleep by the severe itching. He would then scratch his head and face until the blood ran from the scabs. We tried everything we could find, but nothing seemed to give any permanent relief until we tried PHOSPHATE SOAP. Before we had used one cake, the child's head and face were entirely healed and there has been no appearance of the disease since Michael Kan. No 1008 Kirkham St. Fort Veroe, Arizona, Dec. 12, 1879 STANDARD SOAP COMPANY-Gents Having received your box of PHOSPHATE SOAP and having used only one cake of SOAP out of the three, I am happy to say that it has completely cured my sore eyelids which was caused by the ? dust in Idaho Territory, in 1877, and have been sore ever since until I use PHOSPHATE SOAP. Corporal Dennis Burke, Twelfth Infantry San Francisco, November 27, 1879. STANDARD SOAP COMPANY-Gents: After a number of trials of Soaps, I have ? PHOSPHATE is certainly the very best for shaving. I thank you for its introduction. James P ?. The Pacific Bank. Under prudent and judicious management, the Pacific Bank of San Francisco has attained a front place among ? the banking institutions of the Pacific Coast. It is just now entering upon the eighteenth year of its existence, under most promising auspices. It has a paid up capital of $100,000 But more than this it has the fairly earned confidence of the business community. "A prudent and conservative course is one of the first principles of a successful banking" "Banking is a business that should be reciprocally beneficial to borrower and lender" These are the keynotes of its policy, which rigidly adhered to, have fixed it on the rock of public confidence. During the past years of loose banking, panic and failure, this institution has never been viewed by its depositors with uneasiness. No runs have ever been made upon it. Secure in the general confidence, it has held on the even tenor of its way, with the unfailing fruit of dividends at the end of each term. Its sterling character has gained it a choice class of custom, and to-day there is no bank in the city offering to the merchant and farmer more desirable facilities for their business, or more generally appreciated and availed of by them.-The Argonant, January 29, 1881 A Bloated Body Does not always belong to an inebriate. [illustration of a tin of Phosphate Soap with words "trade mark" written across a buckled belt] Phosphate Trade Mark Soap. A superb article for the toilet, beneficial to the skin, giving it a soft, velvety appearance, and leaving a soothing, pleasant sensation after use, imparting a healthy, natural and lasting beauty to the complexion. It eradicates the poisonous effects of cosmetics; preventing skin diseases by acting as a constant purifier and disinfectant; if used constantly will cure skin diseases of long standing; is superior to any other article for bathing infants; cleansing and healing for all eruptions on the scalp or face of children; good for the teeth; produces a soft, creamy lather, nicely adapted to shaving or shampooing, removes dandruff, and gives health to the scalp without injuring the hair. The genuine merits of Phosphate Soap and persistent advertising will force every druggist, groceryman and general dealer to order it by the gross sooner or later. Ask for it in every store. The retail price is 25 cents per cake. We wish to sell it only at wholesale, but in case you cannot find it we will send a nice box of three cakes by mail, postage paid, on receipt of 85 cents in stamps.
