Show Lancers Shut Down Braves By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports BOUNTIFUL - It looked like the battles of old that Bountiful and Layton used to stage. In those earlier glory days these two traditional giants would stand toe to toe and battle each other for gridiron supremacy. MAYBE THE big names have gone their separate ways and maybe this game last Friday wasn't a classic like some in the past but it was still your basic toe to toe confrontation when the Lancers of Layton took a 10-0 decision away from Bountiful last week. "Sure we're disappointed that we lost but we're not discouraged at all, we did a lot of good things out there against a good ball club. We feel we still have the makings of a good football team" admitted Brave head man Kim Peterson. IT LOOKED as if the Braves were going to have their way in the opening minutes and they took the opening kickoff and proceeded down field toward paydirt. However the drive hit a snag around the Lancer twenty-yard line and quickly the .Braves faced a third and eight situation from the Layton 15 yard line. "We had the man open for the first down on that pass play but at the last second our quarterback quar-terback saw another receiver open in the end zone which would have been a touchdown. In the middle of his throwing motion he tried to get the ball to the end zone and the result was an incomplete pass which fell in between both receivers. I can't blame him for trying it but those are the type of things that were happening happen-ing to us all night," he added. AS IT turned out that was about the biggest threat the Braves mounted all night, following that incomplete pass they missed a field goal. In the second quarter Tom Kidd booted a three pointer for the visitors from the north and then the same Kidd character ran over from the lone touchdown final period. The Braves did manage to move the ball against the Lancer defense but it seemed little things like penalties or an interception always came up at the wrong time to stop potential scoring drives. PRIOR TO the battle the Bountiful coaches were concerned about their big but green line. "We realize we have some work to do in this i r . . Overall the coaching staff was pleased with the defense, the lone touchdown came as a result of the Braves giving Layton excellent field position late in the contest. "The defense played well, especially middle linebacker Bruce Riddle. Layton runs the option and ; that's tough to prepare for but the kids were well prepared and they played well." OFFENSIVELY the Braves tried, to mix up their plays and the coach had praise for his quarterback Rob Faddis and his four running backs Chris West, John Evensen, Spencer Zigich and Brian Carling, "Some of them got more playing time than others but all of them looked good." Obviously the Bountiful camp is a little down after the loss but no one is giving up the ship in fact morale just might be a little more with some players just a little more hungry for that first victory. Although the Braves lost 10-0 last week, their coaches were pleased with the overall play of their swarming defense (above tackling Lancer Mark Tucker) and the passing of quarterback Rob Faddis (15) at right. 4 ' - ' i A v- ' " i - I ,.,'' - - '"if' ' , ' ,, ' ",'!,'' . ; - ' V; ' .
