J ls a good team, they have good size, fland they are strong hitters." oath k put the first Pints of the year up ! j,, he bard but then the Wildcats came roar- First a great punt put the Cubs back I tene'r 0Wn three yard Iine and then a great 0 nsive stand forced the Southerners into punt formation in their own end zone. The result was a low snap from center which went out of the end zone giving the Cat defense a well earned safety. WOODS CROSS then took the ensuing kick and marched down the field to record their first touchdown of the season. This first one was a nicture perfect pass from Mike Farner into the arms of running back Mike Dalley who drove into paydirt with a defender all over him. The trv for the point after was a disaster as the snap was high but the Cats still had a 8-6 lead. South then got a big play near mid-field and the quarterback lofted a long pass which seemed to be well covered by the Cats with hree defenders in the area. Somehow though he ball got through all three Cats and the Cub receiver was off for the long touchdown. "It was just one of those plays that should never Jad happened" noted Eldracher st.ll shak.ng his head in disbelief. THEN AFTER AN eventless third period the Cats went to work at the start of the fourth quarter. Taking over on their own nine yard line the Cats mounted a strong drive mixing up the pass and the run. At mid-field the Cats threw a 20 yard completion to Dalley but the play was called back for a holding penalty and it looked as if the Cats would have to punt. That's when Travis McBeth got his hands on the ball. Throwing a short screen pass to this senior tight end looked harmless enough but by the time he was tackled to the ground the Cats had a first down inside the South 20 yard line. "First off he made an outstanding catch of the ball, it wasn't that easy to catch" described Eldracher, "then he shook off a couple of leg tackles and headed outside. At the end of the run he simply ran through two tackles for another ten yards, it was just as great effort on his part." THAT SEEMFD to fire up the team as Farner Far-ner directed them into the end zone for the winning score. On third and goal from the six Farner was back to pass but finding no one open he headed up field and escaped a tackier at the three and rambled in for the six points. South wasn't going to give up without a fight though as their defense recovered a fumble inside the Wildcat 30 yard line. However the Cat defense rose to the occasion and made a great stand on a fourth and four situation with less than a minute to play. Then the Cats simply simp-ly ran out the clock. IT REALLY wasn't a pretty win but then neither was the Cats loss to South a year ago and these seniors remembered that loss and this victory was some sweet revenge. |
