Airman’s Attic By sixth grade students Carlee Chournos and Sean Endsley Note: Airmen’s Attic is a program sponsored through the Red Cross. When a teacher at Valley investigated what could be done to help out with donations to Chinese earthquake victims a few weeks ago, the Red Cross stated that they were not helping out with that problem, but were working to serve people right here at home! Students were excited to participate in helping the families of service men and women through “Airmen’s Attic.” Student Devon Hoxer wrote an article that went home announcing the desire of students to help. The sixth grade class is only taking donations at the school until April 2. Then a caravan of parents will take the items down to the Red Cross. The donated items are in excellent shape—sixth graders have made sure of that! They have sorted, folded, categorized items, and have had a great time decorating the boxes that contain the items. Families of personnel who are overseas may find things that will help them carry on at home. Many of them are trying to survive on a drastically reduced income. The students felt that this was a way they could show their support for our troops! Furniture and small appliances are also accepted. For a better list of needed items, readers can call the Red Cross. The goal is for the sixth grade students to collect at least three tons of items. We have been weighing these items every week. These donations for the Airman’s Attic have come from families all over the Valley. The students started collecting these clothes on March 1. A sixth grade teacher at Valley started this project, and will give the items to the American Red Cross of Northern Utah for delivery. We Salute!
