He was born September 13, 1913, and spent the growing up years of his life in St. Paul, Minnesota, where his parents had emigrated to from Sweden. Although Lester had a long and successful career with Diebold Industries, the job that was the highlight of his working life was in Glacier National Park during the 1930’s. He was a driver of the big red tour buses called “Gear Jammers,” and served as the agent that supervised all of the tour bus drivers for Glacier Park. On one occasion FDR and his staff were returning from the Pacific, and stopped in Glacier Park for a tour. Lester had the privilege of driving for the President and the Secretary of the Navy. He recalls standing so close to the President that he heard his braces click in place when he stood up. In June 1941 during WW II, at the age of 28, he enlisted in the Army. Lester served until October 1945. He was in the 7th Infantry “hourglass” Division, and was a staff sergeant. His four and a half years of duty was spent entirely in the Pacific. He served first on Attu in the Aleutian Islands, and then in the South Pacific. He married Shirley Larson of St. Paul, Minnesota in 1949 in the Little Brown Church in Iowa. Prior to this, Shirley had been a professional ice skater with “Holiday on Ice.” They had one son, Chris L. Johnson, born in 1952. Lester was an eternal optimist. He was one of those people who saw life from only a positive point of view, and made those around him feel positive too. Not a day passed in the last ten years that Les didn’t remark many, many times during the day how lucky, blessed, and happy he was. On his 89th birthday he made the remark that “his life just kept getting better and better.” He was a man who died with no regrets, and who died in the comforting presence of his son. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Johnson of Eden, Utah; and his son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Sue Johnson and his two grandsons, Lars and Anders Johnson, all of Huntsville, Utah. He blessed our lives, and our wish is that his happiness and good cheer smile on us everyday. Cremation under the direction of Myers Mortuary in Ogden.
