Residents Concerned about Possible Motive for Desire to Incorporate We are writing to express our concern about present efforts to incorporate Eden. First, we want to express our love for Ogden Valley and the many good people who live here. We have been homeowners in the Valley for 12 years, and Betty’s parents built their home in Eden over 40 years ago. Pres has served on the Natural Gas Advisory Committee, the Ogden Valley Planning Committee and is currently a member of the Ogden River Watershed Committee. He was President of the Middle Fork Irrigation Company for about ten years. We are Charter Members of the Ogden Valley Land Trust. Our concern about the present effort to incorporate Eden stems, not only from the possibility of increased taxes, but from criticism of the Ogden Valley General Plan by some of the sponsors of incorporation— especially criticism of the three acre minimum lot size. Is a main objective of the sponsors to eliminate the Ogden Valley General Plan, which will become null and void upon incorporation? If so, the next steps could be expensive sewer systems and dense development. The Ogden Valley General Plan was adopted by Weber County after intensive study, public debate, and the services of an expert consulting firm, Bear West. The three-acre minimum lot size represented an effort to maintain the rural qualities of life in the Valley (which we believe a majority of residents desire). Moreover, the county commissioners made the final decision on minimum lot size after studying both potential septic tank pollution of ground water aquifers, and traffic congestion in and out of Ogden Valley. We understand the results of these studies “converged” on the three-acre lot size. The value of land in Ogden Valley today comes mainly from its unique natural qualities, the beautiful surrounding mountains, clean air, wild life, dark night skies, mountain streams, and open spaces. Before we leap to incorporate, let’s make sure that the motivation stems from an effort to maintain and enhance the quality of life in this unique and beautiful valley, rather than the desire of developers to maximize profits from “Park City” style development. Sincerely, Betty and Preston Nibley Eden Inspirational Thought The Right Is More Precious Than the Place It is a fearful thing to lead this great peaceful people into war . . . but the right is more precious then peace, and we shall fight for the things which we have always carried nearest our hearts--for democracy, for the right of those who submit to authority to have a voice in their own governments, for the rights and liberties of small nations, for a universal dominion of right by such a concert of free peoples as shall bring peace and safety to all nations and make the world itself at last free. To such a task we can dedicate our lives and our fortunes, everything that we are and everything that we have, with the pride of those who know that the day has come when America is privileged to spend her blood and her might for the principles that gave her birth and the peace which she has treasured. God help her, she can do no other. -- Woodrow Wilson Deadline for material for the April 15 OVN issue is April 9. Questions on Incorporation Need to Be Answered My family and I have lived in Eden for close to 30 years. I am always for change that betters our community, but I feel strongly that the following questions must be answered directly, honestly, and immediately by the Eden Incorporation Steering Committee. After attending public meetings on incorporation, I have three major concerns: and hundreds of volunteer hours just to pass a pathways master plan. In addition, we have county ordinances governing signage, density, architectural standards, dark sky, as well as common sense building, health and safety codes that have taken years of public hearings and due process to enact. We need a guarantee that these ordinances will remain in place before we sign any petitions. 1. Who are the sponsors? Just as I would never go to work for a company where I didn’t know who the management team was, I won’t support something as major as incorporation without knowing exactly who the people are in the leadership positions. The committee has stated that the committee chairpersons will be the official sponsors. These sponsors will have a great deal of control over the incorporation process. Who are they? 3. How many incorporation sponsors are against the three acre minimum? Most people moved here for the open space and rural life style, and I am sure we want it to continue. A decrease in the threeacre minimum has the likely outcome of forcing a sewer system on Eden residents. Once sewer systems are in place, citizens have few legal recourses to prevent high density development across the valley floor. Is a sea of rooftops our vision for Eden? Unless these questions are answered fully and truthfully, the process should not continue on. 2. Do these sponsors support our existing county ordinances, and pledge to keep them? We have invested 18 months, countless public hearings, thousands in grant dollars, American Legion Continues to Distribute Flags Honoring Service Men and Women As a result of the article in the December 2002 issue of the paper, I have passed out A Blue Star Flag is proudly displayed in Eden. Dave Holmstrom, Eden quite a few Blue Star Flags to Valley residents. I know there are more families out there with children, grandchildren, and husbands on active duty, and I still have some left, and have ordered more. As of today I have given out over 76 flags—One Star, Two Star, Three Star Flags, and even one Gold Star Flag. I have had requests from as far away as Bountiful and Brigham City, and am glad to accommodate anyone who would like to display one in their window. The American Legion distributes the flags. The number of stars on each flag represents the number of family members serving in the war effort. A Gold Star Flag represents a family member who has died in service to their country. Thanks for the article in The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS.
