I'oid Mcliride Ti in panogos Com ni unity Mental Health Center Johnny, an active eight year old, has found a way to control his parents. If he wants something from them he coaxes and pleads until their resistance is broken and he gets his way. Because his parents are afraid to discipline him, they become objects that he can skillfully manipulate. He has set up his rules and his parents comply with them. Johnny uses these behaviors because they work. A child is not spoiled because of how much he receives from his parents but how he gets it. Many children from poor families are spoiled and many children from rich families are not. When a child is given something he needs to understand why. What I'd like to present is a plan to help change a spoiled child's spoiled behavior. First specify a positive behavior you would like to see the child develop. Let's say that the behavior you have, decided on is politeness. Define what you mean by politeness, break it down into observable behaviors. In defining the behavior be specific. Work on one behavior at a time. The second step is to make it possible for the desirable behavior to occur. If you want to increase the child's tendency to say "thank you," set up a situation in whichhe is given something he wan,ts. The third step is to identify iden-tify potential reinforcers or rewards. A useful way of identifying reinforcers is to observe what a child does when he has the opportunity to do what he wishes. It may be watching a particular T.V. program, playing with a favorite toy or eating certain cer-tain foods. Use these reinforcers rein-forcers to reward appropriate ap-propriate behavior. The fourth step is the most important. Reinforce the desired behavior each time it occurs. Do this until the behavior occurs regularly. Once the behavior is being performed with high frequency reward the behavior every third or fourth time. Continue to reward the behavior until it has assumed appropriate strength. When the behavior occurs regularly reward it periodically by verbally praising the child. The value of this kind of approach is the child learns what is meant by good behavior. He also learns what his limits are. With one member opposing op-posing the motion, the City Council last Thursday approved ap-proved the addition of 12 Prospector Square condominiums. con-dominiums. Van Martin, of J.J. Johnson John-son Associates engineering firm, showed the council plans for the addition of the units in the attic portion of six condominium complexes in Prospector Square. Councilman Richard Shoff commented that a friend, who owns one of the condominiums con-dominiums is opposed to the construction of the units because he believed the area to be common space, jointly owned by purchasers in each building. Salt Lake City attorney Stephen McCoy, representing represen-ting the Prospector Square Letter To The Editor Continued From Page 2 preciate the efforts of the Park City School Community Com-munity Council, the Marsac Elementary School Council, the P.T.A., those serving as election judges, and all others who helped in any way. The greatest appreciation is extended on behalf of the students of the Park City School District to the voters and citizens of the community com-munity for support of these particular issues. Sincerely, Richard L. Goodworth, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools developers, told the council original plans for the units showed the attic areas in question as "convertible space" and not as common space. He said the developers intended from the beginning to convert that area into liveable space. He further noted that the area has never been used as common space by the unit owners because there are no stairways leading to the attic. Four members of the City Council approved the addition ad-dition of the units, with councilman Shoff casting a negative vote. Shoff said his friend intended to pursue the issue legally.
