Young pointed to reports in the May 27 Wall Street Journal which showed that Aspen Ski Corporation, a subsidiary of 20th Century Fox, contributed $10.8 million to net income during the last quarter. Young said that as Aspen's sister resort, if Vail had received "anywhere near" the reported repor-ted income, Skiflation could not understand awarding any lift rate increases. "In our opinion the prices are still unconscionable in the profit picture of the last two years," he stated. Young continued, "Facing the present gasoline crunch, we don't understand at all why the areas are rushing to increases. It just proves to us that people will pay anything to ski and shows a monopoly there." Skiflation has maintained that "consensus "con-sensus pricing" by the ski industry has led to a monopoly in the ski industry. in-dustry. Skiflation member Craven Young said that the protest was lodged in Colorado because of a comparability clause contained in permits granted to ski operators by the U.S. Forest Service. Aspen and Vail have been considered comparable to and competitive com-petitive with Sun Valley Company which operates Bald Mountain. Skiflation carried formal protests on Sun Valley lift ticket increases to the highest levels of the Forest Service in Washington, D.C. last year. However, according accord-ing to Young, because increases in-creases at the Colorado resorts had already been approved, the Forest Service Ser-vice maintained that identical iden-tical prices could not be denied to Sun Valley. "As long as the comparability clause exists, the government govern-ment will be powerless to keep Sun Valley from the same," Young stated. Skiflation began its consumer con-sumer watchdog role on ski prices last spring and vowed that efforts would continue. The new protest is based on Skiflation's belief that prices should be reviewed with an eye to the operator's profit.
