TI FDTDRE GUEAT7 Secretary Meloy of the Eal Estate Exchange, Ex-change, Has no Uncertain Opinion to Express ZION A GREAT OBJECTIVE POINT. The City's Natural A Wantages Pointed Out and the Fault-Fibder? Referred to Pleasantly Eat Earnestly- i Secretary Melroy of the real estate exchange being asked this morning for his views as to the future greatness and prosperity of Sail Lake City, mado the following statement to a Tim us man: "I cannot say iu a few moments what I have consumed hours.nay w hole days, in thinking about; but if you think it would bo of iutorest to your readers, or add one sheaf to the harvest of our fair city's greatness, I w ill not mind unburdening un-burdening myself. "Let nio remind yon first, however, that I have been a resident of ion scarcely two years; but it is now about five years since I began to shape my course in this direction. I might add, that before deciding to make this my permanent home I had occasion to visit and inspect other western points. lur ing the first three years of the five re ferrcd to business called me to the principal prin-cipal cities of tho Pacitio coast, as well as to tho ceutors and intermouutain region." re-gion." "Well, never mind about yourself, but what of Salt Lake?" T am now in Salt Lake City, and I Intend to end my days ouly just be-trim be-trim where I have pitched my tent. Now, don't interrupt me and I will give you a reason or two for my presence here, and for the faith that is in me. "I will be as brief as possible In sounding the key-note of Zion's future greatness (her varied and untold natural resources) I but voice the sentiment senti-ment of tho best and roost far-seoing minds that have lately bearded our lion in his jungle lair, wandered with an observing ob-serving eye throughout the broad ex-pause ex-pause of her fertile valleys, and marked the presence of great mineral wealth in her mountain confines. These are sufficient to support a population pop-ulation of three times tho number now hero, aud they are yet scarcely out of their kites. I would like just here to paint a few rhetorical rainbows, prophetic pro-phetic in their nature but please keep your seats; I wo'n't do anything of the kind. I desire, howevor to say simply that I know of no city on this continent favored as this one is by nature with varied resources and attractions. It combines the raw elements of material greatness with the languid climatio and influences of an Italian Spa. The eyes of the entire country have been, and are, on Salt Lake City. Her fame and certain future greatness are food for thought and gossip throughout the length and breadth of this broad land: and the result of this thought is making itself manifest in a capitalistic bugle call to arms! You know, and I know that hundreds nay, thousands of eastern men are but awaiting the coming com-ing of spring lo begin their grand march to Zion. Many of their, are now quietly quiet-ly stealing in and casting their anchors with us. Witness the purchase of tho "Utah Driving park," the recent stock yard syndicate purchase, and others of greater importance soon to be unfolded. It seems to rae certain, and my opinion opin-ion is founded on a careful study of the situation at home, as well as an oft repeated re-peated touching of the outside pulse, that beneath Salt Lake City today is surging the gathering forces of a volcanic vol-canic prosperity that will" at no distant day burst forth into full activity, and cause a goodly number of her croaking drones to open their eyes in astonishment. astonish-ment. Why will so many of our fellow citizens citi-zens waste their breath and ink in heralding her-alding to the world that great calamity (?) the departure of ft handful of ink-slinging ink-slinging railroad clerks, for repose, to our little ambitious neighbor on the north? Why waste energy in denying Ogden this precious boon when we have a city to hnild? Whv busv ourselves in ad- vertising so dire a calamity while hundreds hun-dreds are calling on us daily, in no uncertain tones, for reliable information informa-tion about Salt Lake city? What matters it if the whole Union Pacilic system were lifted bodily, and carried out of our sight forever, while the Rock Island, Burlington, Santa Fe and Northwestern are reaching for us, and only awaiting the proper encouragement encour-agement to land our freight at our doors? Why hint at the advisability of boycotting boy-cotting the Union Pacific road, while we have the data that will convince other roads that the facilities of the Union Pacific and Rio Grande Western are entirely inadequate to handle the freight already moved to and from our city? Why rant over the libelous utterances of an oDscure illustrated publication, except for the purpose of a little free advertising,, while we have a Deep Creek road to build, and an incoming and anxious horde to furnish with reliable re-liable information and investments? Why sulk in our teuts condoling with each other over the results of the late international financial panic, while we are able to elaborate this fact viz: That any other city west of the Missouri river, had the panic struck it under like conditions, would have been leveled level-ed to the ground, so to speak, like a bending wbeet field in the line of an Iowa tornado. Salt Lake city stands today -with her head "high up in air" unshaken and unshakable. In point of accumulated wealth, material ma-terial resources, natural advantages, as a banking and commercial ceutre, on her clearing house reports, in her substantial sub-stantial building improvements, as a smelting centre, as a manufacturing centre, as a sanitarium, on her bright future, on her ouly great dead sea, I crown her Queen of tho Rockies. I have wedded her for better or for worse, and if for worse, God help our common country. 1 have no fears; I am content. Did you ask me what I think of Salt Lake City? Call again, aud good day.
