Uo trace baa yet been discovered of the es- . caped murderer and the Butte deputy sheriff, who disappeared from an in-oamlaf in-oamlaf outbound passenger train yesterday. Sheriff Qninn and police officers and sheriffs are engaged in a close search of the surrounding country. I i Early this morning a stranger was seen in a bedraggled condition about five miles north of this city, but he disappeared before officers could be notified. The officers believe now that the murderer killed the deputy sheriff after leaving the train, threw the body into the Ogden river and then escaped, . j The report come from Ogden that Deputy Sheriff Miller of Butte. Mont, and a supposed murderer whom he had in custody disappeared from a Southern Padflo train Tuesday. and no trace of either can be found. ' The prisoner is alleged al-leged to be one Lennox. Monday he received a telegram from Tecoma, Nev to the. effect that the man was under arrest at that place. He also asked the Sheriff to wire him $50 and to meet him at the county Jail in Ogdtn ' Tuesday. The Sheriff wired the money and immediately went to Ogden. but neither Miller nor his prisoner came in on the morning train. Aa investigation was at once started. Brakeman Malan remembered two men answering the description of Miller and Lennox and said that he took the sest checks out of their hats at Corlnne. He noticed the supposed officer going; to the door at Ogden river bridge, but remembered remem-bered nothing further. Theories in the Case. The failure of Miller to" put in an appearance ap-pearance has given rise to two theories: One that he. was deceiving; the officer, and had never made the arrest; the other that the prisoner jumped from the train Just as it was pulling into Ogden and the officer followed and was possibly possi-bly foully dealt with. A diligent search of the brush along the tracks and the river banks was made yesterday by the officers with no results. Information is being sought from Tecoma to ascertain whether the arrest was really made there or not. In the meantime all the officers are on the lookout for clses to the mystery. LENNOX CONDEMNED TO DEATH FOR MURDER OF A CONDUCTOR IN 1903. BUTTE, Mont.. May 4. Charles Lennox, Len-nox, for whom Sheriff Qulnn of Silver Bow county is searching in Utah, is wanted here for the murder of Charles Williams, a B. A. 4 P freight conductor conduc-tor at Silver Bow Junction, this county. In May, 102. Lennox was found guilty and condemned con-demned to death. In August. 1903. he broke Jail with six others including his accomplice, James Martin. Martin was recaptured and hanged here last February. Febru-ary. Should Lennox be recaptured he will be hung at once, as when he broke Jail the Supreme court abrogated his right of appeal. i |
