Certainly, none is intended. After our conversation on the telephone I felt that, before I could continue with my day's activities, there are some things that I just have to get off my chest. As you know, the reason I called your home was to find out why your son missed an appointment with me on Friday. Perhaps, that is a very insignificant matter. But as I think about it, and as my daily experiences seem to show me, I think we have ail missed a much more important "appointment ". When I spoke to you, I noticed a note of worry in your voice. I supposed that you were imagining your sons being put into military uniform and sent away to the far parts of the earth. Motherly concern? Certainly nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, as a father who loves his children, and considers them one of my (and yours) most important asse ts, I truly respect your honest feelings. The thing that greatly concerns me is that your reaction to my suggestion that your sons render some service in the military is not at all unusual. It seems that most of us agree that America, our country, is the greatest, most blessed land upon the whole earth. Indeed, we enjoy more freedom a.id greater abundance than any place I know of. I am convinced that ours is the most perfect form .of earthly government that exists; one which affords EISM2MPU ?? o 0 0 DURING THE WHOLE MARCH HI SMALL OF FRIES FRENCH PURCHASE ORDER WITH OF g HUNGRY HiElBEElT'S each Your Choice Of Any Sandwich Soft Drink Or Hot Beverage Hot Turnover o 230 WEST 1230 197 NORTH Dine in a truly Mexican at' while bein mosphere serenaded by strollin Mariachis. I am just trying to show you that my job as an Air Force enlisted man, although unique in its overall purpose, is actually no different than anyone else's "to job when it comes raising my family or living my life. private When our sons leave home, regardless of where it is they go, they will do things the way we have taught them at home. Someone's sons do have to go. Maybe yours, and maybe mine. I hope that the ones who do go are good, honest, moral men. Sons like yours, sons like mine. And I hope that we will have taught them properly of the importance of that which they do Thev are part of the future of America. Neal J. Westwood, SSgt, USAF Recruiter a ri EVERY SANDWICH!! o to grow and develop as individual, human beings. Now, we come to the missed "appointment'' that I mentioned above. Few of us would be willing to give up our American way of life; most of us hope to preserve that, or even better, for our children. Une very important factor in that preservation is a superior military force There we have missed our "appointment". It seems that fewer and fewer young Americans are willing to come forward and serve the interests of onr country in uniform. Why'1 1 think, perhaps, that in the years of conscription we became used to the fact that if our number was called "we had to go". But now, with the All Volunteer Force, we all hope that someone will go, but let it be "someone else ". I think that to many of us fail to realize that we are the "only ones" available. It is our country. I am not trying to say that you should run down and insure that all of your sons enlist in the armed forces. Rather, if one of your sons does decide to choose the armed forces, please don't fear for him, and don't discourage him with your fears. Instead, be proud of him; encourage him by reminding him of the good th.ngs that he will do for all of us. There is one more thing that I would like to tell you.
