The exhibit, entitled "The Photography of Charles Ellis Johnson," is being shown on the fifth floor of the Harris Fine Arts Center at Brigham Young University. It is part al of the Mormon of Arts, sponsored by the BYU College of Fine Arts and Communications. Mr. Johnson was one of the pioneers of photography in Utah, said Nelson Wadsworth, an assistant professor of communications at BYU. At the turn of the century he was hired by a wealthy Fe-tiv- Mountford, to accompany her to Jerusalem. There Mr. Johnson took pictures of the city and the surrounding area to be displayed at the St. Louis World's Fair. But a dispite arose between Mrs. Mountford and the fair's management, and the pictures were never shown. After Mr. Johnson died in 192C, the picture plates were shuffled among relatives until they ended in the hands of David Fox. Mr. Fox offered them to BYU, and the school eagerly accepted. "There are 2,000 negatives," said Professor Wadsworth. "They were in pretty sad shape when I got them." He went to work on them, and after cleaning and restoring, the plates began to look better and better. When entry time for exhibits in the Mormon Festival of Arts rolled around, he chose about 200 of the better plates and Asked by Payson Club Week humanitarian special Optometric is now underway in Payson.
