Ben Garrison of Eden says that he became a Sterling Scholar due to a personal goal. “My parents are my inspiration. They have always supported me 110 percent. Without them, I certainly wouldn’t be where I am today.” His advice to future Sterling Scholars— “Always strive to be the best you can. There’s always room to improve!” Ben says that he decided to become a Sterling Scholar in math because it’s his best and favorite subject. Amanda Gleaves of Nordic Valley was chosen as a Sterling Scholar in dance. A member of Weber High’s drill team, she watched other drill team members honored as Sterling Scholars in previous years, and admired their dedication. Amanda’s advice to future Sterling Scholars— “Don’t be afraid of failure; just go for it! If you have the desire and are willing to work hard enough, you can do it!” Amanda says that dancing for her is a passion. “I’ve been dancing all my life.” “Always do your best, and you can do anything!” That’s the philosophy of English Sterling Scholar Emily Songer of Huntsville. Quoting Aristotle, she also states, “Excellence is not a state of mind but a habit.” Emily says that other Sterling Scholars, especially her brothers and sister who were also Sterling Scholars, inspired her to make the effort to do likewise. According to Emily, being an English Sterling Scholar is great because of its importance. “You use Ben Garrison writing skills your whole life. I love literature, and I have always loved to read.” The Weber High Sterling Scholars will now move on to compete in Region on February 27. State Sterling Scholar finals will be held March 1 at Alta High School in Salt Lake City. Congratulation students, and good luck at Region. |
