Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Volume V, Issue X Page 13 March 1, 2002 Eden Resident Offers Opportunity to Say “Da” to Russia By Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News Staff Eden resident Dr. LaRae Larkin, Professor of Russian History at Weber State University, leads no ordinary life. Since 1984 she has made 40 trips to Russia and other Eastern European Countries, many as Chris and Travis Poulson of Eden on tour in Russia with Dr. Larkin in 1998. organizer and director of tours and study abroad programs. Larkin explains, “I love taking tour groups to Russia. I relive the excitement of Russia through the students and tour members, over and over again as they experience for the first time the culture and historical sites of this fascinating country.” Dr. Larkin says she first gained a love of Russian history after taking an upper division class from a Russian professor as a freshman when she was pursuing her bachelors degree in History while attending school at California State University. “He was a fantastic teacher—after that class, I was hooked.” Before teaching at Weber State, Dr. Larkin taught at Roy High School. While at Roy, she also led many student tours to Russia and Ukraine. Dr. Larkin received her Masters in Russian and Eastern European History, and her Doctorate in Political Science from the University of Utah with her areas of emphasis in International Law, International Relations, Foreign Policy, Comparative Politics, and Soviet and Russian Comparative Politics. Dr. Larkin has directed study abroad programs at Moscow State University, Moscow State University of International Relations, the University of Kiev, Volga River Study Abroad Cruise, and the University of Tartu. Dr. Larkin will be directing a tour group to Russia June 14 through June 26, 2002. The group will make stops in Moscow, Novogorod, St. Petersburg, and Helsinki, with tours to the Kremlin and Armory Museum, St. Basil’s and Red Square, the Hermitage Museum, Peter and Paul Fortress, Alexander Nevsky Complex, St. Sophia Cathedral, and many other historic sites. Plus, there will be time for shopping at galleries and flea markets, and a Gala dinner and Folk Show at Nikolaevski Palace. The theme of the program is “Russia in the 21st Century.” The program includes a two-week seminar series looking at politics and business in Russia from historical, current, and future perspectives. Top specialists from Russia’s top universities and industry will address students on topics that will provide a solid understanding of the Russian economy, business infra- structure, and the country’s domestic and foreign policy, with excursions to local enterprises and political structures. Forty hours of Russian language study will also be provided during a four-week period.
