He went on to take the necessary courses to become a level 23 officiator in order to volunteer with his wife at Snowbasin. Volunteers are very involved with Alpine ski racing, overseeing the rules of racing for the province of British Columbia. Sandie’s job is to formulate rules for children ages 6 and 7 years old, up to 18 years of age. The next officiating stage is for international levels, which we have seen here with the Olympics. They also officiated at the World Cup in Whistler, B.C. Sandie stated that if you talk to anybody who knows about skiing in general, they will know about Whistler. Sandie and Gray Hales came here and were utterly impressed with the organization from the transportation volunteers to the mountain spectators. There were 1400 volunteers working the hill at Snowbasin. Sandie said the race committee was very efficient, and gave high marks to Race Committee President Tim La Marsh, “The pressure the organization was under was incredible.” Sandie said she would give a 4star rating to everyone involved. A number of other officials came from Vancouver. They also stated how very impressed they were with the events and with everyone involved. Though only working at Snowbasin during the Olympics, Sandie and Gary Hales also visited the Medals Plaza and Park City. They loved the wonderful weather and the great entertainment. They thoroughly enjoyed seeing their friends that they have made. They commented that everyone was very helpful here in Ogden Valley. Sandie and Gary also visited the Valley last year when they worked at the Para-Olympics held at Snowbasin. They then met Brent Johnson’s father, who invited them to stay with Terri and Brent of Eden while volunteering for the 2002 Olympics.
