Show missile tries hard but loses to cyprus 13 to 0 in thursday tilt by W D bush cyprus high highs s powerful pirates came to grantsville Grants ville last thursday afternoon all set to knock the cowboys all over the green turf but met instead of a set up a primed plucky little eleven which had them using their best stuff and fighting hard to hold onto the lead lea d they had piled up before the game was over and although the score ended up 13 0 in favor of the pirates the big story of the day was the battle put up by the red and whites against a team which was supposed to beat them 30 or 40 points stanley skip johnson and lee chapman led their team in the assault on the grantsville Grants ville line and each scored a touchdown john son with his plunging twisting drives piled up yardage the hard way through the center while chapman added his up mostly bi by end arounds and sweeps although chapman had good interference he proved that he could also make ga ns on h s own as he made two runs good for 20 yards apiece and several others of 5 or 10 yards the pair could easily be compared to mr inside and mr outside in the way they work the first score came in the im ini bial quarter afeei after about a 50 yard drive from the mid stripe to pay dirt after stan johnson made a first down on the grantsville Grants ville 29 chapmon broke away for a 20 yard dash to the line from there skip johnson carried the ball over the goal line on the third try the remainder of the first ter was uneventful except for one nice run by fred hale good for 11 yards in the second canto the two johnsons and chapman took turns running the ball for cyprus but after three attempts failed to gain the necessary ten yards they decided to punt from their own 34 but the kick was blocked and grantsville Grants ville took over on the cy 15 however on the next play billy ratcliffe fumbled the ball and the pirates recovered after one try gained nothing chapman again got away for 20 yards stan johnson picked up 10 then was tackled hard on the next play by don hunter for no gain taking to the air the buccos tried a pass but it was intercepted by arlo fawson on the first play fred hale made a nice gain of 9 yards but the play was nullified because of a holding penalty on grants ville and 15 yards were stepped oft off this necessitated kicking which the cowboys did the ball going to cyprus 25 where it was taken arld and returned to the 48 in two plays skip macle mae 4 yards chapman added 6 more then stan johnson picked up eleven more hard spectacular tackles by rat cliffe and martin cook set the pi rates down with little gain several times and on the third down with the ball on the G H S 23 yard line chapman was smeared for a three yard loss when les hunter fred hale and roland anderson cracked through the line to drop him and on the fourth down the ball was fumbled and recovered by grantsville Grants ville fawson took it for a couple then roland anderson on the finest run of the day took the ball raced sideways chased by three pirates then danced straight up the sidelines for 25 yards and a first down on the cy 45 the cowboys tried one more ground play then a pass which was intercepted by the pir ates les hunter tackling the in in his tracks roland anderson nailed the runner on the next play after a one yard gain and the half ended with cyprus leading 6 to 0 callister kicked off to the cy 20 to open the third quarter and the fans had a thrill when the ball was momentarily fumbled but recovered by the pirates on their own 31 yard line skip john son then took the ball four straight times picking up a first down on his 42 then gave the ball to chap man who fumbled but recovered himself on the next play sandberg broke through the line and drop ped pete salvo for a three yard loss then anderson dropped chap man for no gain and johnson was forced to punt ratcliffe took the kick on h s own 20 and returned it to the 35 hale then went for three and faw son for ten and a first down rat cliffe lost a yard then fawson went again for nine more yards ratcliffe f e made ten on a fake punt and a first down and it began to look like the cowboys were go ing to start roll ng however on the next play roland anderson was caught behind the line when he was trying to pass and thrown for a loss then fawson tried a pass but could rit t connect so he tried one more a beautiful long i twisting spiral that barely sailed I 1 over anderson s head on the pirate ten yard line on the next play a bad pass from center caused a fumble which was recovered by cyprus on the grantsville Grants ville 48 1 after three tries netted 0 only six yards due to some fine tackling by B 11 ratcliffe stan johnson took the ball on a beautifully executed fake and was away for 10 yards and a first down one play later he picked up another first down on an 8 yard romp putting the ball on the grantsville Grants ville 20 in two plays the pirates got it to the 16 and the quarter ended but on the opening play of the last stanza chapman again ran for a 6 and a first down on the red and white ten yard line then took the ball over from the 3 yard line two plays later the conversion was square ly between the uprights and the score was 13 0 the final quarter was featured by some brilliant running by the cowboys scat backs roland ander son again went for 25 yards and fawson passed and ran to add yards to the offensive and man aged to get to the pirate 26 yard line but here the opposition stif bened and the ball was lost ork on downs from this point on the only interesting that happened was kaye jefferies Jef fenes beautiful tack ie on desera which netted cyprus a ten yard loss at one time the pirates were back to their own 19 yard line but the cowboys could not get hold of the ball to put it over three bad breaks spoiled the game for grantsville Grants ville and had they gotten good breaks instead of bad ones the cowboys just might have tied or even beaten the mighty pirates the first tough break was the pirate recovery of grantsville Grants ville s fumble which eventually led to the initial touchdown the other two bad ones were the fumbles made by the cowboys deep in cy territory if coach petersons boys could find some way of hold ing onto that ball they would be a real threat in the jordan league grantsville Grants ville was handicapped by the loss of frank durfee and don but this was offset by thurman and henderson who sat on the pirate bench cyprus nabbed 12 first downs to grantsville Grants ville villes s 6 and chapman and stan johnson lead the winners in yardage gained with 81 and 61 re ively but roland anderson of grantsville Grants ville was the fair haired boy on the field with his two long runs and brilliant defensive play he was in on several tackles and continually fouled up the pirate attack hale made some good gains and fawson gained 54 yards him self on the I 1 ne brown and cook were stalwarts sandberg also made some good tackles les hunter was not as effective as he has been in other games but never played a good game starting lineups grantsville Grants ville cyprus elsholz LER henderson callister falvo
