Show ff field stream 99 by VERNON W SHIELDS the following Is a letter I 1 re from the U S game man argement agent regarding my in as to the size of shot to be used on waterfowl in utah this year dear mr shields your letter of september is at hand and the contents noted with special regard to the size of shot to be used on waterfowl in utah this year the article you observed ed in the salt lake tribune by don brooks stating that no 2 shot was the largest which could be used on ducks and geese is correct and I 1 may say that it was stemmed from the sportsmen themselves in their carelessness while hunting in close proximity to other hunters with some near tragic accidents happen ing in the 1946 season however I 1 do wish to ex tend my sincere appreciation for bour interest in getting the true facts before the sporting public very truly yours floyd A thompson U S game management abt well that Is that we can cant t use anything larger than no 2 shot on geese this year this little regula tion was added on by the utah fish and game commission and is not in the federal proclamation the state fish and game corn com miss on may add to the federal proclamation but they cannot take anything from it don dont t be ed if next year they tack on a regu altion outlawing anything larger than a bean shooter I 1 think that the whole trouble was caused from the fact that last year there was a shortage of shotgun ammunition and a lot of the boys were using buckshot shells which were released by the government I 1 agree that it would be dangerous where there is any concentration of hunters a few hair brained would be sportsmen are always spoiling things for ev elyone else LOST YOUR DEER TAG deer tags will be replaced by the utah fish and game commis sion upon application supported by affidavit from the license deal er who issued the original permit and accompanied by a mt ser vice charge this explanation was r made aade by ross leonard state game director following a series of requests from utah sportsmen this procedure applies to all licenses issued for utah hunting and fishing mr leonard also warned hunters not to tinker with the deer tags to the extent that they lock the ends necessitating new tags POSTED HUNTING AREAS chave I 1 have received reports that tain salt lake interests are trying to sign up the erda farmers for exclusive rights to pheasant hunt ing privileges if this is true it is illegal and there is going to be plenty of trouble over the situa tion the law reads when in the judgment of land owners the creation of a posted hunting areas will result in pro lection and propagation of game birds more satisfactory hunting greater income to agriculture greater protection to landowners and will otherwise be in the pub lis interest the commissioner is authorized after giving notice and an opportunity to be heard by the sports sportsmen mens s associations if any located in the county where the proposed hunting area is to be created to issue licenses for the establishment of such areas when the commissioner concludes that it is to the best interest of the game birds that a posted hunting area be created posted hunting areas may be created by the own ers of contiguous tracts of land aggregating 1000 acres or more or when less than 1000 acres not entirely contiguous can be feasibly organized into posted hunting a reas yeas such land owners may so or gamze and the commissioner may license the organization the li cense cerise will contain these provisions 1 that the licensees shall cooper ate with the fish and game corn com missioner in propagation and pro teching pheasants and other up land birds in such areas 2 that the licensees in connection with the fish and game commissioner shall clearly define the boundaries of such hunting area signs to be prescribed and furnished by the commissioner 3 that the fish and game commissioner may keep said areas stocked by releasing pheasants and other upland birds thereon with the express agree ment of the owner or owners of the land during the hunting seas on and for a period of not to ex aeed 30 days prior to the opening thereof the collector may issue permits for hunting within each posted area which permit shall entitle the person to whom issued to hunt within the posted area during duri ig the hunting season the fee to be paid by the hunter for such permit shall be 1 each it shall be unlawful for any person to hunt within the boundaries of a posted area without first having obtained a hunting permit from the callec tor the deputy game warden and collector shall under the limit pre scribed by the fish and game corn com missioner and the landowner landowners s as acting jointly having dis power to determine the number permitted upon said area and shall have power to refuse entry to all in excess of the numb er specified by him that s the way the law reads and if anything different from this is going on then the two sports men s organizations had better get together and do something about it and quick there s no use getting pheasants planted out here and then getting cheated out of hunting them |
