They were treated to By Ellie Arave, Sixth Grade Student Reporter lunch and games in the conference room and given a certificate. We want to congratulate our students and the hard work they do! On April 29, the kindergarten classes of Valley Elementary School had their annual singing program. They sang songs about the seasons, the months, colors, and what class activities they had done throughout the year. One activity was their field trip to Hogle Zoo. Some of the students even had a few minutes of fame, and gave a solo speech about the song they were about to sing. They even went the extra mile and learned all three verses of the national anthem. So give those kindergarteners a big Aim High When America was young, many different countries came to settle the wild country. Most came for a better life, or for more freedom, and others for some elbow room. Suddenly America had so many people it was becoming a country. George Washington led America into war to make sure the beautiful free country stayed free. George Washington risked his life to make a place where people could live as they want to. When America asked him to be their king, he refuses saying they did not leave England to make a new England. George Washington set the standard high, that anyone’ dream could come true, even freedom. Once America started to mature, people found that America was not as free as it seemed to be. African-Americans were slaves and they were treated like cattle driven to work without any pay. The sixteenth president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, knew that America would never be free as long as slavery existed in the United States. Abraham mended the broken North and South. He even showed his integrity by not imprisoning all who opposed him after the war. He let the Southern citizens have their homes back and let them have the same freedoms as the Northern citizens. He truly brought the country together. “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” – Constitution of the United States XIII – Slavery Abolished. One important person who ever influenced America is Martin Luther King, Jr. He taught that we could all live together in peace and harmony. Every day he was beaten down, told it could not happen, and most doubted his words. Mr. King fought the odds and made an impact greater than 9/11 Terrorist Attack. He gave every color, race, and person the freedom to look eye-to-eye to everyone he or she meets. Now anyone can reach to touch the stars. Now everyone in the United States has the right to vote, apply for the job you want, have equal access to housing, and all other rights that make men and women equal. “Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out Get Ready foR summeR! They helped create a society where every man, woman, and child has the right to work hard and to be who they want to be. They make laws to protect us, and even humbled us so we could love our brethren. In the world today, I am protected by men and women willing to risk their lives to make sure that life here in the states stays free. Defeat is not an option to these men and women. They have opposed every obstacle to help America reach its goals. I have rights, and there are people everyday who help make sure I keep them. The defend America, and they are proud to stand and say they are American. They will die to ensure that we will live safely. We may not know them, but we do know they are giving us the ultimate gift of freedom. Sadly some of the new generation takes their ultimate gift for granted. They have never seen war, and have never been in bondage. They do not know, and don’t care. Will the new generation forget our past and forget our eternal goal to aim high? It is our responsibility with our freedom to boost America. We must, as Martin Luther King Jr. strived for, to work with our neighbors instead of against them. We need to work together to mend old feuds, and start knew friendships as Abraham Lincoln did. We have to set the standard like George Washington and yell to the world that we are America. Motivate our neighbors to reach, to try. I am proud to say I am American, and I have often thought how can I live up to my heroes? Like all Americans, I have a dream, and my dream is that one day, just one day, we might look at our brothers and sisters knowing the freedoms we share. That we all must protect our freedom and cherish it. How can any of contribute? We could all start by aiming high.
