No snow, no school, summer vacations, family reunions, watermelon, swimming . . . aaaaand . . . those two words heard over and over all summer long by mothers across the Valley . . . “I’m bored.” Most kids and youth have the solution for boredom . . . video games! Play stations, Xboxes, DSI’s, ipods; by the end of the summer, many kids will be more in touch with their I-Touch than the world and the great outdoors. But High Altitude Kids and Adventures has once again expanded their summer programs and are offering great solutions to this annual boredom and electronic overload problem. “We are very excited to announce our Adventure Series this summer,” says owner Chandra Barrong. Our Adventure Series focuses on helping kids enjoy and appreciate the great outdoors. This year, we are offering a wide variety of camps that are appealing to anyone from 3 to 15 years old. This year’s lineup of camps will include rock climbing, fishing, wilderness survival, wake boarding, nature photography, mountain biking, and more. We are especially excited to offer a 3-day, 2-night backpacking trip into the Uintah Mountains. The trip will be led by Caralee Burton, who received her degree from the University of Utah in recreation, specializing in overnight wilderness trips. She has guided ten day trips in the past, and loves introducing youth to backpacking. She will be accompanied by her husband Tom Burton, a 5th grade teacher, as well as other support staff. “It is such a great way to explore nature with youth. We sometimes don’t realize how much noise and commotion kids are surrounded by in today’s world. Backpacking introduces youth to the grandeur, simplicity, and peacefulness of nature and the outdoors.” In addition to High Altitude Kids and Adventures outdoor series, other camps such as Star Wars, Ninja Camp, Fancy Girls, Cheer Camp, and others will be offered to keep children learning and entertained all summer long. The invitational-only event will showcase Utah’s best baseball players ages 12-17. This event is a qualifying opportunity for Team Mountain West ball clubs that will play in the USA Baseball National Team Identification Series (NTIS). The competition will take place in July of 2010. This event is by invitation only, based on individual performance in earlier events. College recruiters and professional scouts from all over the west will be in attendance to identify and recruit Utah’s top players. “Hundreds of Utah’s best players will showcase their talents for college and professional scouts in Ogden,” said Bob Keyes, Mountain West Baseball representative. “This is the first time we are bringing the Prospect Games north, and the Ogden baseball facilities are well equipped to showcase these players.” The tournament will take place at Lindquist Field, home of the Raptors baseball team in downtown, and Serge Simmons Field in west Ogden. The games have previously been held at Gates Field located at Kearns High School, and Salt Lake Community College. The tournament will consist of one teninning game for each age division, as well as an evaluation workout and drills prior to each game. The tournament will be allocated in four one-hour time slots. The top competitors will be chosen to advance to the Mountain West Regional NTIS event where they will compete for a spot on team Mountain West. Inclusive of the best players from Utah, the team will also feature top athletes from Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico. The top incoming 7-12 grades will be selected and notified by the Academy (sponsor of Team Mountain West) weeks prior to the event. Participants will be placed on teams by graduating class. My goal in starting the school was to provide an option for our children to get outside and learn about nature. We live in a valley of great natural wonders and resources, yet my children, and possibly yours, seem to have a hard time playing outside. We face a growing disconnect between today’s children and nature. I am sure many of you remember what we call “The Good Ol’ Days,” but what does that mean? For me it was playing outside, getting dirty, building forts, and tracking animals. Today, our children have DS’s, Wii’s, TV’s, and the internet and it is getting harder and harder for them to find fun in something less stimulating. There is a new term for this concern—“Nature Deficit Disorder.” It is not a medical term but rather one coined to express the slow progressive of play to the inside instead of outside. With TV and the internet it is now possible for children to know more about the animals in the Amazon Rainforest than in their own back yards. With the help of the Ogden Nature Center, Utah Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), Utah Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Forest Service, Nature Conservancy, Weber Pathways, Hawkwatch, and local teachers, artists, and writers, we have put together a summer program designed to leave “No Child Left Inside.” The Program This is not a daycare program. All camps will be full of outdoor activities. We have put together eleven weeklong day camps, each with an exciting nature-based topic that kids will find interesting. Groups will be divided up by grade. Children entering K-2 grades will attend between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon; and 3-6 grades will attend 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The average day will consist of a nature walk, unstructured nature playtime, nature crafts, and guest teacher lessons. We will utilize many locations within the valley such as Snowbasin, Kelly Creek Farms, North Fork Park, Wolf Creek Resort, private lands, and Pineview Shorelines. Pickup and drop off will be at the Eden Park bowery. Offerings Some of the camp offerings included the following: Spring on the Farm, June 7-11: Baby farm animals abound, spring planting, and garden insects.
