Show Volume XVII Issue XXIII The Ogden Valley news Page 11 May 15, 2010 Valley Elementary Students Walk the Walk For the eleventh year in OGDEN VALLEY a row Valley Elementary sixth graders will participate in a hike sponsored this year by the Community Foundation of Ogden Valley. Each year Ed Radford has provided prizes for an essay contest and buses to the trailhead. According to sixth-grade teacher Michelle Evans, “Learning experiences just don’t get any better than this.” The awareness the hike brings to children is incomparable. They learn, perhaps for the first time, about the network of pathways in Ogden Valley, and frequently bring their families back to use them. They also develop an attitude of community giving when they help rid the pathways of dyer’s woad, which crops up in the spring. Michelle says the students bring bags, and weed like Trojans! The outdoor hike also helps youth develop a sense of wonder and reverence for the natural world around them. They also learn trail etiquette. Even though they learn manners at home, learning them in the out-of-doors can be different. For instance, horses always have the right of way on a path; then pedestrians and, lastly, bicycles. However, as Mrs. Evans cautions, it is frequently easier for a person on foot to move out of the way of a fast-moving bike than vice versa. This year’s hikes will be held May 17 and 18, and again on May 20 and 21. The hikes will begin at the north Yacht Club Parking lot, with the children traversing back to the school. Volunteers are welcome. For more information, or to volunteer, contact hike coordinator Marion Horna at 801745-2337. COMMUNITY cont. from page 1 Valley 6th graders.
